ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Ongoing issues with unpaid employees and incorrect tax forms were key topics at the Rochester City School District’s public forum on Tuesday. Workers and union representatives gathered at the district headquarters on West Broad Street to voice their concerns.
Since the arrival of W-2 forms, staff have reported errors in 401(k) contributions, health savings accounts, and even incorrect salaries on their tax documents. Union representatives for teachers and staff expressed their dissatisfaction.
“Our members cannot afford system glitches; they cannot spend hours trying to resolve payroll discrepencies, submitting tickets, making phone calls and sometimes waiting weeks for corrections, and many tickets sit unresolved,” said Angelo Palmerini, representing non-teaching staff. He added: “At this point, hoping for a miracle fix to the Oracle payroll system is not a strategy, it is avoidance.”
Laura Kuhn, secretary/treasurer of support-staff union BENTE Local 2419, and Adam Urbanski, president of the Rochester Teachers Association, were critical of a district email about W-2 forms, which they characterized as impersonal and confusing.
“Nobody employed by the Rochester city school district has confidence that the next paycheck will be accurate,” Urbanski said. “… If you cannot do right the very basic function of paying your employees correctly, what else can’t you do right?” He said that for seven consecutive years, resignations mid-school-year have outnumbered retirements as the end of the school year.
Superintendent Dr. Eric Jay Rosser has said the district is engaged in a feasibility study to determine whether a different platform than Oracle would be better suited to the district’s needs.
The district’s budget is also millions of dollars in deficit. Rosser is expected to present the budget next Thursday. The final vote on the budget will not take place until the summer.
