Why Tremaine Edmunds Might Be an Offseason Cap Casualty ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Tremaine Edmunds turned in a solid season for the 2025 Chicago Bears. But with the team needing to create cap space, and Edmunds having no guaranteed money left on his contract, there is a chance that he will not be back in 2026.

Edmunds turned in another triple-digit tackle campaign in 2025, doing so for the eighth straight season since being drafted in 2018. It also marks his third straight such season since arriving in Chicago in 2023.

Edmunds ranked 16th among 93 linebackers with an 81.1 PFF run defense grade this season. But despite four interceptions, Pro Football Focus’ 52.9 coverage grade suggests he wasn’t much of a factor in that area of the game. The same can be said in the pass-rush department, where he picked up just one sack and three quarterback hits en route to earning a 54.9 pass-rush grade. Don’t get me wrong. The four interceptions look nice, but Edmunds allowed 51 receptions for 475 yards on 64 target coverages, with opposing quarterbacks logging a 87.2 passer rating when targeting Edmunds in coverage.

Edmunds missed four games due to a late-season groin injury, then graded out poorly in most areas when he returned from injury in Week 16. He allowed 16 receptions (on 16 targets), 161 yards, and two touchdowns in coverage. The 16 receptions allowed in that span were the second most at his position, and the 148.2 opposing passer rating was the fourth-worst in the league.

It wasn’t just the coverage skills that struggled down the stretch, though. Edmunds recorded a 4.5 percent run-stop rate (64th) and a 5.6-yard average depth of tackle (74th). For what it’s worth, Edmunds earned tackling grades of 80.4 (vs. Lions in Week 18), 80.2 (vs. Packers in the Wild Card Round), and 80.9 (vs. Rams in the Divisional Round). PFF also had him down for a 75.1 run defense grade against Detroit in Week 18 and 73.7 against Green Bay on Wild Card Saturday. But that number dipped to 58.2 in the playoff loss to Los Angeles.

By the Numbers

Games: 13 Tackles: 112 Solo: 61 Assisted: 51 Tackles-for-loss: 3 Quarterback hits: 3 Sacks: 1 Interceptions: 4 PFF Grade: 66.4 (34th of 88 linebackers)

Edmunds is entering the final year of a four-year, $72 million deal signed in 2023. Edmunds is set to make $13.9 million in base salary and roughly $3.54 million in bonuses. With no guaranteed money remaining on his deal, and a potential $15 million in cap savings (at the cost of a $2.4375 million hit in dead money) available with a pre-June 1 cut, there is reason to believe that Edmunds has likely played his final game with the Chicago Bears.

Turning the Page

It’s very possible Tremaine Edmunds wasn’t 100 percent healthy and came back down the stretch to help Chicago secure a division title. Regardless, the conversation surrounding Edmunds has nothing to do with his performance.

Chicago needs to clear cap space, and parting ways with Edmunds is the most obvious move to alleviate the team’s current cap situation. Edmunds probably still has gas left in the tank, but his price point is too rich for Chicago right now for a team with multiple needs to fill this offseason on the defensive side of the ball and a pretty deep linebacker draft class awaiting teams in April when the NFL Draft begins.

It is possible Chicago could reap similar cap benefits in 2026 by extending Edmunds, but I see that as a less likely option than cutting him and moving on at this point.
