Garrett Peters has announced his verbal commitment to swim for American University, located in Washington D.C., starting in the fall of 2026. He confirmed the news in an email to SwimSwam, writing:
I am excited to announce my commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at American University! I would like to thank all of my family, friends, and coaches that have been with me through my journey. I also want to thank the AU swim and dive staff for this amazing opportunity. Go Eagles!
A senior at Chamblee High School School in Atlanta, Ga., Peters has competed for his school’s varsity swimming and diving team since his freshman year. He also currently trains year-round with Dynamo Swim Club, where he specializes in backstroke, freestyle, and IM.
Peters most recently wrapped up high school career at last month’s Georgia High School Association (GHSA) 5A State Championships, finishing fourth in the 100 back (51.99) and sixth in the 200 IM (1:57.75) with personal best times. Both were his best placements at the meet after finishing ninth in the 100 back the past two years and ninth in the 200 IM last year.
He set his 100 free best of 48.76 at the 2024 GHSA meet, clocked his 1:48.38 200 free at the Georgia Senior State Championships in December 2024, and posted his 200 back best of 1:52.57 at the Speedo Southern Premier in February 2025.
While his freestyle personal bests are a bit outdated, he’s made significant progress in both backstroke and IM over the past year. A year ago, he owned best times of 54.05 in the 100 back, 1:56.06 in the 200 back, and 1:59.25 in the 200 IM, meaning he dropped over two seconds in the 100 back, nearly three and a half in the 200 back, and a second and a half in the 200 IM.

To earn a second swim at the meet, it took times of 50.40/1:52.22 in the 100/200 back, 45.64/1:41.15 in the 100/200 free, and 1:53.00 in the 200 IM, putting Peters just 35-hundredths shy of what it took to earn a second swim in the 200 back.
On the team itself, Peters would currently rank first in the 200 back, third in the 200 IM, fourth in the 100 back, seventh in the 200 free, and ninth in the 100 free, putting him in a position to be an immediate contributor right from the start. Given that all of those ahead of him in the 100 back and 200 IM are underclassmen, and the team’s fastest swimmers currently sit at 51.29 and 1:56.10, it should make for a competitive training group with similar personal bests to push each other.
Peters joins 21.7/47.8 sprint freestyler Sam Cave and 57.9/2:08.5 breaststroker Ethan Hodson as the only publicized recruits in the Eagles class of 2030.
