ROCHESTER, N.Y. – We get a break in the flakes for most of today after eclipsing 100″ of snow on the season yesterday. This is officially the 4th quickest winter to reach 100″ in the last century… The only three faster seasons were 1978, 2003, and 1970, which finished at 139.2″, 112″, and 102.5″ respectively.
Today will be another cold one, with highs in the low to mid 20s and wind chills in the low teens. The good news is we get a break from the snow with partly cloudy skies, up until this evening around 6-7pm when a clipper moves through. That will dump some snow overnight, but not much… 1-3″ at the most.
Even if you don’t have a Valentine this year, you’re sure to feel a little warmer! Flakes continue Saturday morning, but taper off with mostly cloudy skies after and highs reaching just above freezing. Sunday is even better, with more sunshine and highs in the upper 30s!
High temperatures gradually get higher and higher over the course of next week… But with them comes two concerns: 1) A more active weather pattern later in the week means we run the risk of rain, freezing rain, sleet, and snow. It’s impossible to know which one specifically we will get and when, since there will be a very fine line between precipitation types depending on our exact temperature. 2) Even without an active storm pattern, above freezing days and below freezing nights means snow will have chances to melt and refreeze as ice overnight. This means untreated roads, driveways, and sidewalks are going to be slippery.
Confidence for above-normal temperatures continuing after the ten day forecast is decent, but we’ll keep tracking the trends and send out updates.
