NBA All-Star Weekend: What the Heck Are We Doing At This Point? ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Here we are, the final slate of games before the NBA All-Star break. The league is still recovering from the chaos of the trade deadline (and a couple ugly fights). In the wake of all of the player movement, things get serious for teams that wan to win. And, for the rest of us, things now get a little unserious.

You’ll see some egregious tanking, surprise “injury management” nights and random suspensions.

Thankfully, we have NBA All-Star Weekend. Right? That should make everything for NBA fans better… right?

I have some thoughts about the weekend’s events.

“Celebrity” Involvement in the NBA All-Star Experience

The concept and format of everything happening at NBA All-Star Weekend already has me asking, “Wait… what?”

But this isn’t even about the main event.

All-Star Weekend has slowly turned into a hollow version of itself, and the league keeps trying new paint jobs to make it shine again. But you can’t put lipstick on a pig.

This year, though, I want to focus on the two “celebrity” events first.

First up: the NBA Celebrity Game, a supposed staple of the weekend. Most of the names? Fine, I guess. Whatever. But the real issue is with the “Red” team. They’ve got Jeremy Lin, who officially retired less than a year ago, and 7-foot-6 Tacko Fall — still very much active — on the same roster.

I’m sorry… are we stretching the definition of “celebrity” here? (Yes, pun intended considering Fall’s size.)

And even if we say yes, sure, technically they are, are we just ignoring the fact that these guys actually played in the NBA and aren’t washed-up, past-their-prime legends? How is that fair to the average-Joe celebrities in the game? If Lin and Tacko really wanted to, they could combine for 100 points by halftime. So either it’s a blowout, or they sandbag it, and if they sandbag it, what little competitive appeal the game had disappears anyway.

QB1 Shooting 3s — Against an Active NBA Player?

Then there’s the “celebrity” three-point shootout, which includes TikTok star and Oklahoma City Thunder guard Jared McCain. Just to be clear: McCain is an ACTIVE NBA player. He averaged 15 points per game last season and is shooting 50% from three in his stint with OKC.

That guy… is in the “celebrity” three-point contest?

And he’s not some meme shooter either. This isn’t Draymond Green losing to Kevin Hart in a gimmick contest. McCain actually trains for this. Shooting is part of his job description. Yet somehow, he’s slotted into the celebrity bracket instead of the real thing.

Nevermind that Richard Jefferson is “only” 45 — an age at which it isn’t unrealistic to still be playing in the NBA at LeBron’s house. He played almost 1,200 regular season games in the league, retiring in 2018. He’s a “celebrity” because he was… wait for it… and NBA player.

I guess there wasn’t room in the actual three-point contest — you know, the one that features Damian Lillard, who hasn’t even played this season — for guys like Luke Kennard (highest percentage this year), Derrick White (third-most attempts), or Trey Murphy (sixth-most makes)?

It just feels like decisions being made for the sake of making them. Not merit. Not logic. Just vibes.

The NBA seemingly can’t figure out why fans don’t care about their all-star festivities. Maybe if they took it seriously, fans would, too.
