A Greeley man could spend close to 30 years in prison for shooting and killing another man during a 2024 birthday party.
Ricardo Velado-Contreras, 22, pleaded guilty to one charge of second-degree murder in a January plea agreement and was sentenced to 28 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections, according to a Weld County District Attorney news release. One charge of first-degree murder and two charges of a violent crime causing death were dismissed as part of the deal.
Velado-Contreras shot Julian Lozano-Pinon after a verbal argument, where Velado-Contreras confronted Lozano-Pinon over allegations of inappropriate sexual contact with the defendant’s little brother, according to the release.
The victim denied the allegations, and the two argued before Velado-Contreras shot Lozano-Pinon once in the chest, according to the release. Police found the victim with a gunshot wound and took him to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The shooting happened July 4, 2024, in the 2400 block of 11th Ave, during Velado-Contreras’ birthday party.
During the investigation, police found that people at the party were consuming alcohol and cocaine and also that Velado-Contreras was showing off a 9mm handgun with an extended magazine during the party, according to the release.
