D’Andre Swift Was the NFL’s Most Improved Running Back in 2025 ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

D’Andre Swift was seemingly on the hot seat when the 2025 NFL season kicked off. He was coming off of a disappointing first season with the Bears and seemed to be at risk of losing snaps and touches after an offseason in which Chicago’s football team was often rumored to be looking for a new running back. But instead of a fall off, Swift turned in his most productive season as a pro.

Some folks might have been surprised by the turnaround from a disappointing 2024 to an exhilarating 2025. But Ben Johnson wouldn’t be one of those people. Instead, the Bears head coach was public with his support of D’Andre Swift from the get-go. This is a Johnson quote on Swift from an interview he did at the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis:

“He’s an explosive athlete. There’s a number of things that he can do both in the running game and in the passing game. I do think he can help ignite an offense because he’s got that playmaking ability, so it’ll be fun to start to work together again here this springtime with him.”

It’s almost as if Johnson knows what he is doing…

The 2025 NFL season will always be a memorable one for D’Andre Swift, who set new career highs in rushing yards (1,087), rushing scores (9), and scrimmage yards (1,386). Swift’s 5.4 yards per touch last year represented his best showing in that category since posting an average of 6.3 yards per touch in 2022. And while his 4.9 yards per carry weren’t a career best, it marks his second best showing as a pro.

Even the advanced analytics were digging D’Andre Swift. He had 30 runs of 10+ yards, which were the seventh-most in the league. His 87.0 PFF run grade was the sixth-best among NFL running backs. Jonathan Taylor, Bijan Robinson, Josh Jacobs, and Jahmyr Gibbs were among the backs who Swift graded out better than in this category. Those are some productive, high-profile names that Swift ranks ahead of on the grade scale. No wonder Pro Football Focus pegged Swift as the NFL’s most-improved running back.

By the Numbers

Swift is entering the final year of a three-year, $24 million contract that he signed in March 2024. His deal comes with a cap number of $8,803,334 and a base salary of $6.39 million. This is a modest deal for a running back, particularly one who was as productive as Swift was in 2025. But should the Bears want to move on, they could cut Swift and create $7.47 million in cap space while getting hit with a dead money hit of $1,333,334. The cap savings would be nice, but creating a need for no good reason beyond creating cap space seems illogical.

Turning the Page

It is a regular occurrence for big-ticket free-agent signings to get off to a slow start with their new team. However, it isn’t always the case to see that player excel in their second season. But when it came to D’Andre Swift, he thrived in 2025 after a lousy 2024 as he reunited with Ben Johnson. Kudos to Johnson for striking a balance with a timeshare split and giving Swift a backfield running mate who was an ideal fit for the scheme. But also, let’s not forget to credit Swift for making the most of the playing time he was given.

What’s next for D’Andre Swift and the Bears is up in the air. Swift is entering the final year of the three-year contract he signed with the team in 2024. Rumors surfaced that Chicago might kick the tires on Travis Etienne Jr., a running back who is set to hit free agency this offseason. To make that happen, the Bears would have to part ways with Swift in order to create the type of cap space that would allow Etienne to squeeze into the picture. Given what the Bears have in Swift and Monangai, I’m not sure it makes sense to go down a path of cutting Swift to add a high-priced free-agent running back.

It speaks volumes for Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson’s offense for this team to have gotten as much production as they did from Swift while giving him fewer touches (257 in 2025, 295 in 2024) and in fewer games (16 games in 2025, 17 games in 2024) while splitting time with a rookie running back (Kyle Monangai). I wonder what Johnson and Swift have in store for an encore in 2026.
