Jenny’s Malt Shop & Diner has been capturing the hearts, and stomachs, of Greeley since it was called Tropical Sno and occupied a less-than-convenient spot on 10th Street. Owners Jenny Garcia — the namesake — and her husband, Abe, recently sat down with the Greeley Tribune to talk about the diner’s nearly 40 years in business.

How did Jenny’s Malt Shop & Diner get its start?

JG: I started it in like 1988. I always wanted to have my own business, and I grew up with a place like this in Gilcrest. We got started as Tropical Sno kind of on the west side, which wasn’t that far west back then (roughly 10th Street and 28th Avenue). We were there for about a year and a half and I didn’t think it would work, so we decided to look for something new. We found this building, and we’ve been here ever since.

What does Jenny’s do, and what sets your business apart from the rest?

JG: We have 150-plus flavors of shave ice and more than 150 flavors of shakes and malts. Plus the candy, the flavored puffcorn, the chocolates, the cinnamon chews and other flavors. A lot of that has come lately. But our burgers are patted out fresh every day. Our burritos are made to order. Everything is made fresh when you come in.

AG: I tell her we should change our advertising. We’ve been buttering our buns and making smash burgers since before it was trendy. She probably started that, it was like 37 years ago.

JG: Our customers tell us that they feel like they’re at home. We’ve had kids from UNC come in and tell me, “Just make us something. Whatever you want to make us today.” I would cook for them like I would cook for my kids.

What was a significant moment or event for Jenny’s?

AG: One that stands out is when we changed the name to Jenny’s about 12 years ago. We were Tropical Sno for years, but a lot of people didn’t know that we made food as well, because most of our advertising is word of mouth. But I always want to be connected with Tropical Sno, because that’s what we opened up the business as, so on the logo it says Jenny’s Malt Shop and Diner featuring Tropical Sno.

What drives your success?

AG: Good food. Best shave ice in town.

JG: From what I hear from our customers, they enjoy coming in here because they like the atmosphere. I like to take my time making food for my customers because I do it with love. I make it like I’m cooking for my kids.

What are your goals for the future?

JG: We have three children and five grandchildren, and we’re hoping that one of them will want to take over. Because we’re both in our 80s now. If not, my thought is eventually to get away from the food, because I’ve always wanted to open up a candy shop that sells nostalgic stuff and stuff that nobody else has.
