A mother and her boyfriend are facing charges related to the homicide of an 8-year-old boy in a north suburb of Chicago, authorities announced Saturday.
Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office announced 33-year-old Dominique Servant and her 38-year-old boyfriend, Joey L. Ruffin, were each charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of child endangerment causing death after police found Servant’s 8-year-old son unresponsive at their Round Lake Beach home Friday afternoon.
Around 2:05 p.m., Round Lake Beach Police officers responded to a call of an unresponsive child at a residence on the 1900 block of Cedar Lake Road, the Lake County Major Crime Task Force said.
Upon arrival, officers immediately started CPR on the child until paramedics arrived and took over the life-saving efforts.
The 8-year-old boy was transported to a local hospital, where he later was pronounced dead, authorities said.
First responders reported the boy appeared to be malnourished and had bruising on his body.
Based on the circumstances and the child’s “suspicious injuries,” Round Lake Beach Police requested assistance from Lake County Major Crime Task Force with the investigation.
Investigators found evidence the child had been subject to long-term neglect, physical abuse and mental abuse, authorities said.
Though autopsy findings are not yet finalized, preliminary findings show signs consistent with long-term malnourishment and physical abuse, authorities said.
Servant and Ruffin were taken into custody Friday night, authorities said.
A 10-year-old sibling of the victim was interviewed at the Lake County Children’s Advocacy Center and later admitted to a local hospital due to signs of abuse and malnourishment.
Servant and Ruffin are both due in court Sunday. The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office said it intends to file a petition to detain them both while they await trial.
