Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools Announces Second Consecutive Remote Learning Day, Fourth of School Year ...Middle East

News by : (chapelboro) -

Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools students will have their fourth remote learning day of the school year on Tuesday, Feb. 3 as the district continues to wait for snowy and icy road conditions to clear.

The school district shared an alert with families at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, saying it will operate for the second consecutive day on remote learning. Pre-K and elementary school students will continue working on “age-appropriate activities and lessons” provided by teachers, while middle and high school students will have “Plan C” synchronous instruction with teachers in virtual sessions.

The call comes after CHCCS held two remote learning days on Jan. 27-28 following Winter Storm Fern’s significant sleet and ice that created travel issues. The district cited similar issues for Monday and Tuesday in the wake of Winter Storm Gianna — leaving CHCCS just one more remote learning day available under state law. North Carolina public schools are allowed five per academic year as part of requirements to hold either 185 days or 1,025 total hours of instruction.

In Monday’s communication to families, CHCCS Chief Communications Officer Andy Jenks said, as of now, no additional changes to the school calendar are expected despite the stretch of remote learning days. Jenks cited the decision in December to convert a teacher workday to normal instruction. He also said Monday Feb. 9 is still slated to be a professional learning day for staff with no classes for students, while Tuesday, Feb. 17 is off in observance of the Lunar New Year and Tuesday, Mar. 3 has no school because of primary Election Day.

Meanwhile, Orange County Schools has exhausted its remote learning day options in the wake of Winter Storm Fern last week and cancelled classes for Monday. Chatham County Schools has one day of remote learning left, and similarly cancelled classes for Monday. As of 2:45 p.m., neither district has announced plans for instruction on Tuesday.
