Despite 22-0 start, Arizona’s mindset remains ‘one game at a time’ ...Middle East

Sport by : (Arizona sports) -

The Arizona Wildcats set a program record with their 22nd straight win to start the season on Saturday against Arizona State, but the Wildcats’ focus remains one game at a time.

“I think it’s just a testament to our hard work,” Arizona freshman Koa Peat said postgame. “Our mindset is just to take it one game at a time, keep getting better each and every day in practice.”

This message has remained steadfast throughout Arizona’s season. In mid-January, the Wildcats had reached No. 1 in the country at 16-0 ahead of their first matchup with the Sun Devils.

Coach Tommy Lloyd commended his team on its ability to stay “in the moment” and remain “process-oriented” rather than obsessing over outcomes.

“We have mature competitors. Our guys don’t have hubris,” Lloyd said postgame Saturday. “They know there’s things they got to get better at, we can get better from and they’re mature enough to handle it when I come in there and say, ‘Hey, great job, but we got to get better, and here’s some things we can get better at. So, let’s attack those things.’ And this team has gotten so much better.”

“We’re 1-0. It was a great week.”

Arizona has six top-20 wins this season and has been ranked No. 1 for seven straight weeks.

Lloyd said the key to Arizona’s dominance has been its steadiness and stability.

“We value steadiness. A lot of people talk about momentum, momentum, momentum. I understand what momentum is, but I think there’s way more value in being steady and consistent,” Lloyd said. “Then from there, you’re going to get opportunities to create momentum. If you’re just worried about panic and having momentum, you really don’t have any substance to what you’re doing.

“So, we talk about just saying steady, steady, steady and then identify. Steady is consistent effort, consistent decision making, you know, things of that nature, sticking to the game plan, no panic and using each other. Those are examples of things we talk about a lot. I think those put us in position to make those runs and create momentum opportunities.”

The Wildcats have five players averaging at least 10 points per game, and five players with at least 50 assists this season.

What’s next for Arizona?

The Wildcats have a gauntlet of a schedule coming up. If Arizona’s going to continue its magical undefeated season, it’s going to earn it.

The nation’s best team will return home and get a week off before facing the Oklahoma State Cowboys. But then Arizona will face four straight ranked opponents, and six of its final eight opponents in the regular season will be ranked.

With the Wildcats past the halfway point of the season, Lloyd sat the team down yesterday to show them the progress they’ve made thus far.

“We showed some film from practice early in the year on our trip in Casa Grande. We showed it and our guys didn’t even recognize themselves physically, the way we were playing and just how much better we’ve gotten,” Lloyd said. “And the message to our guys is, ‘Look how far we’ve come in four months. Okay, that’s a credit to you guys. Now, let’s dream big and see how much better we can get the next month and two.’

“Let’s not just assume we’re at our endpoint. Let’s keep building, let’s keep getting better. I think our guys appreciate that stuff and then who doesn’t like to get better. I think our guys really appreciate the challenge of improving.”

Arizona will play Kansas, Texas Tech, BYU and Houston in four straight games. Then the Wildcats will play at Baylor before facing Kansas and Iowa State back-to-back.
