Futures qualifier Cullen Descalzo has announced his verbal commitment to compete for Rollins College beginning in the fall of 2026. He publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:
I am extremely excited to announce my verbal commitment to Rollins College. I would like to thank my family, friends, and teammates for helping me pursue my academic and athletic career. All thanks to god. Go TARS!

The Florida native transferred to JR Arnold High School this year from Fort Walton Beach High School and competed on the varsity swimming and diving team. Descalzo also trains year-round with Cat 5 Aquatics, specializing in backstroke and middle-distance freestyle.
While Descalzo has improved each season, 2025 was a breakthrough year that elevated his recruiting profile. He began the year with personal bests of 51.04/1:46.62 in the 100/200 free and 54.80/1:57.78 in the 100/200 back, and by year’s end lowered them to 48.70/1:45.21 and 51.91/1:51.65.
A two-time individual qualifier for the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Class 2A State Championships, Descalzo finished fifth in both the 100 back (52.05) and 200 IM (1:57.43) in November, with his time in the 100 back representing a career best at the time. In 2024, he narrowly missed out on making ‘A’ finals, touching ninth in the 200 IM (1:57.14) and 10th in the 50 free (21.49).
Two weeks after the conclusion of the high school season, Descalzo competed at the GPAC Gravy Bowl Invitational, where he clocked his current personal bests in the 100 back (51.91), 200 back (1:51.65), and 200 free (1:45.21). His best time in the 100 free (48.70) came earlier this month at the 19th Annual Ralph Crocker Classic. Given that he was about a second off his other best times at that meet (52.86 in the 100 back, 1:47.32 in the 200 free, and 1:55.25 in the 200 back), the 100 free could have more potential down the line.
Beyond short course, Descalzo qualified for and competed at the Futures Championships in Ocala over the summer, where he placed 41st in the 200 back (2:13.11), 42nd in the 100 back (1:00.98), and 43rd in the 50 back (28.69). He had set best times of 28.53, 59.97, and 2:10.46 in those events a few weeks earlier, along with 56.80/2:05.08 in the 100/200 free.

Last season, the men’s team took fifth out of seven teams at the conference meet. Based on his best times, Descalzo would have landed in the ‘B’ final in the 200 back, giving him a chance to score points right from the start. It took times of 50.76 in the 100 back and 45.12/1:39.33 in the 100/200 free to score in his other top events.
On the team’s current depth chart, he would rank third in the 200 back, fourth in the 100 back, seventh in the 200 free, and 16th in the 100 free, setting him up to be a key contributor for the Tars. Luke Dinges (48.59/1:45.46) and Nick Bonta (50.23/1:49.33), the team’s best backstrokers, are set to graduate in May, making Descalzo a timely addition to the program.
Current freshman sprinter Campbell Williams, who has been 51.55 in the 100 back, and Descalzo will likely handle the backstroke leg of the medley relays in future years, while Descalzo and current freshman Jaden Amores, who has been a similar 1:51.27 in the 200 back, will be the go-tos for dual meets and conference scoring.
With some improvements in the freestyles, Descalzo could also work his way onto the team’s free relays during his tenure with the Tars. Fellow incoming recruit Danny Garcia, a versatile free/fly/IM specialist who’s been as quick as 21.0/45.4/1:38.9, will likely be the headliner on those. The two join Logan Cook (breast/IM) as the only publicized commits in the university’s recruiting class of 2030.
