The 98th Academy Awards will limit the March 15 ceremony to only two performances of the five nominees for best original song.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences sent a missive to the five nominees stating that “the live performance focus will be concentrated on two musical moments this year, Sinners and KPop Demon Hunters, with segments designed to honor how music helped these stories resonate worldwide.” Those songs are “I Lied to You” from Sinners and “Golden” from KPop Demon Hunters. Variety first reported the news, which Billboard has confirmed. Raphael Saadiq and Ludwig Göransson wrote “I Lied to You,” while “Golden” is credited to EJAE, Mark Sonnenblick, Joong Gyu Kwak, Yu. Han Lee, Hee Dong Nam, Jeong Hoon Seon and Teddy Park.
The letter, which was signed by executive producers Raj Kapoor and Katy Mullan and producer Taryn Hurd, stresses that each of the remaining three nominees “will be introduced through a bespoke package built from footage of the film it was written for, grounding the song firmly in its cinematic purpose.” The three signees cite “limited time within the broadcast,” as well as a “desire to create a fast-paced, entertaining and cohesive show,” for the decision.
Also nominated are “Dear Me” from Diane Warren: Relentless, music and lyrics by Warren; “Train Dreams” from Train Dreams, music by Nick Cave and Bryce Dessner and lyrics by Cave and “Sweet Dreams of Joy” from Viva Verdi!, music and lyrics by Nicholas Pike. Following his Jan. 22 nomination, Pike had expressed excitement at hearing his composition performed on the show, telling Billboard he had told soprano Ana Maria Martinez, who sings the aria, that he wasn’t going to rest “until you’re singing on the Oscars stage.”
Though nominees had expressed to Billboard that they hoped for a return to all five songs being performed during the ceremony after none was performed at the 2025 awards show, all songs being showcased in that way is not a guarantee. Since 2012, only seven ceremonies have included live performances of all the nominated songs, including the 2023 and 2024 shows. More usual has been some configuration of live performances and taped pieces, such as in 2016 when three of the five songs were performed live and the other two were represented by film clips.
The news follows the Golden Globes declining to present the best original score award on the air at the Jan. 11 ceremony. Sinners composer Göransson accepted his award in front of attendees at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, but the speech was not shown on television.
Warren and Pike declined to comment, while Dessner’s representative did not respond to a request for comment. The Academy also declined to comment. The Oscars, telecast from Los Angeles’ Dolby Theater, will be hosted by Conan O’Brien.
