Antwaan Randle El Comes to DJ Moore’s Defense ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

While DJ Moore might be polarizing to some Chicago Bears fans, it sure sounds like he has the support of his position coach — which is probably more important in the grand scheme of things.

In an interview with WGN’s Jarrett Payton, Bears WRs Coach Antwaan Randle El disussed a variety of topics. One thing that stood out from the chat session was Randle El coming to the defense of one of DJ Moore. You’ll want to check out the whole thing on your own time because I found the conversation to be insightful and interesting. But in the meantime, this clip feels worth sharing and highlighting right now:

Bears WRs coach Antwaan Randle El defends WR DJ Moore against public criticism and highlights his growth as a player and his big play ability for Chicago: “this year the special was on display. What’s next for DJ Moore and the Chicago Bears?

As we discussed on the most recent installment of The Bleacher Nation Bears Podcast, DJ Moore’s name is a lightning rod right now. Fans who were left with a sour taste in their mouths after this play at the end of the postseason loss to the Los Angeles Rams have pivoted to turn their indignation to voice their desire to see Moore traded off of the team. And those rumblings arren’t going to be silenced any time soon, especially with pundits and insiders predicting that DJ could be on the move this offseason.

For instance, ESPN’s Benjamin Solak’s big Bears offseason prediction is that Chicago’s football team will trade DJ Moore. Here is his reasoning behind that conjecture:

The Bears will trade wide receiver DJ Moore, as the future of the position seems set with Rome Odunze and Luther Burden III. Most of Moore’s money is tied up in salary, not bonuses, which makes it palatable for Chicago to trade him even with four years left on his contract. At 29, he should still be enticing to teams in need of veteran WR play.

On the one hand, I understand where Solak is coming from. With Rome Odunze, Luther Burden III, and tight end Colston Loveland in tow, Moore is less likely to be the focal point of the offense. Perhaps, with the cap savings that would come via trade, Chicago could reallocate those funds and make improvements elsewhere on the roster. Plus, giving Moore a fresh start where he can be *THE* top target for an offense would be a nice nod and a way to say “thanks” to a player leaving town.

But on the other hand, it feels like trading Moore would be short-sighted, risky, and possibly problematic. Odunze, Burden, and Loveland each missed time due to injuries last year. Meanwhile, Moore, who played in all 17 games last season despite being nicked up throughout the season, was a go-to guy whenever someone around him went down with an injury. It wouldn’t be smart to just give that type of player away just for the sake of creating cap space. Plus, Moore is a certified Packers killer. That guy hauled in two game-winning touchdown passes in the biggest games of the year against your biggest rivals. Why would you want to just give that away? I certainly don’t love the idea.

The other thing that makes me weary of a DJ Moore trade is that it seems to really like it here. After years of playing on losing teams, Moore got a taste of winning football for the first time since he was a senior in high school. Moore was also vocal about his willigness to sacrifice stats for the greater good. Getting a premier player to buy in with a team-first mentality is a pretty big deal. It is the type of thing that could rub off on others.

In the end, I’m not sure what the future holds for DJ Moore. Trade chatter has already begun and will be unavoidable for the foreseeable future. If it this offseason comes with a trade the Bears can’t say no to, then so be it. But just know that I’m not advocating for one. Not when creating cap space and getting under the projected 2026 NFL salary cap would be as simple as restructuring his contract. We’ll continue to monitor Moore’s situation throughout the offseason. Hopefully, whatever comes of it is something that will satisfy all parties.
