Donnie Wahlberg confirmed that another Blue Bloods alum is set to appear on Boston Blue after the show recast one of the former cast members.
Wahlberg, 56, confirmed at the Television Critics Association panel on Tuesday, January 27, that Len Cariou is returning as Danny’s grandfather Henry in an upcoming episode. According to TVLine, Cariou, 86, will make a guest appearance in episode 13 while Erin (Bridget Moynahan) will be featured again in episode 17.
“Grandpa Reagan’s going to be showing up and Erin’s going to show up again,” Wahlberg said before teasing his character Danny’s onscreen romance with Maria (Marisa Ramirez). “I think there are layers to all this still, right? So there is, of course, Maria, and I think they’re figuring things out.”
He continued: “I’m not going to reveal too much … I will just tell you that it’s not resolved, and she will be back in the coming episodes.”

Blue Bloods, which aired from 2010 to 2024, following Tom Selleck as the Reagan family patriarch and NYC police commissioner Frank. Frank’s father, Henry (Cariou), and children — daughter Erin (Moynahan) and sons Danny (Wahlberg) and Jamie (Will Estes) — were also central to the show. (The role of Sean, meanwhile, was played by Andrew Terraciano in Blue Bloods before Mika Amonsen took over in Boston Blue.)
Speculation arose in 2023 that Blue Bloods was coming to an end. At the time, the police procedural was renewed, but the cast and producers agreed to take a 25 percent pay cut. Selleck, 80, later addressed the official cancellation news and questioned the decision.
CBS“I’m kind of frustrated,” he told TV Insider in October 2024. “During those last eight shows, I haven’t wanted to talk about an ending for Blue Bloods but about it still being wildly successful.”
Selleck argued that Blue Bloods should have remained on the air, saying, “I’m not going to turn into a bitter old guy saying, ‘Get off my lawn.’ I don’t believe in holding grudges, but if you were to say to the television network, ‘Here’s a show you can program in the worst time slot you got, and it is going to guarantee you winning Friday night for the next 15 years,’ it would be almost impossible to believe.”
At the time, Selleck said his frustration came from the show always being “taken for granted because it performed from the get-go.”

“So, how do I feel?” he continued. “It’s going to take a long time to sort all of this out. I remember after the weekend [of the final episode’s shoot], I said, ‘I’ve got to get to bed early tonight because I have to do my dialogue for Monday.’ Well, there was no Monday. It’s just going to take a while.”
While some Blue Bloods stars reprised their roles on Boston Blue, Selleck was recently asked about the possibility of coming back, telling Hour Detroit in November 2025, “I don’t know if I would do Boston Blue — that’s another show.”
The actor noted that technically Frank’s story came to an end.
“I think it’s partly my lot in life to make sure Blue Bloods has its place in television history,” Selleck said. “But I don’t think it’s my lot in life to keep playing Frank Reagan.”
Selleck also sounded off on the surprising Blue Bloods cancellation. “It was a huge disappointment, and I still don’t know why CBS did it,” he shared. “If you get rid of the football, we were the sixth most popular series in all of television.”
Boston Blue returns to CBS Friday, February 27, at 10 p.m. ET. New episodes will be streaming the next day on Paramount+.
