Dubbed “black metal provocateurs,” the group (Johanna Holt Kleive, Nikoline Spjelkavik, Victoria Røising) has only been around a few years, but they’ve quickly developed a following. The 16-date tour runs from May 27 to June 16, kicking off at Philadelphia’s Underground Arts before heading to Toronto’s Prepare The Ground Festival, where they’ll share the stage with the newly reformed Torche, legendary doom metal band Pallbearer, …And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, and so many more.
Tickets go on general sale Friday, January 30, at 10 am local time.
For those concerned about their name, the band said that “Satan” represents “a kind of joker figure” who is more a symbol of “rebellion and freedom.” Those themes play heavily in Witch Club Satan’s music.
Because the trio incorporates feminist themes into their music, often railing against the injustices women have endured throughout the years.
“I feel that black metal is a really feminine genre,” Johanna Kleive told Louder. “Because women have screamed throughout history. Many people who have seen us perform tell us it feels like we scream not just one woman’s scream, but every woman’s scream.”
Both Spjelkavik and Røising grew up listening to black and extreme metal. Kleive, who was raised on jazz and classical music, came to the group as a new fan. “I had to learn from this genre, and learn how to find my voice in it,” she said. “Suddenly I realised it has everything to do with me, and the girls as well.”
With a visually captivating stage show that makes use of the members’ theatrical background, Witch Club Satan has created a “movement of witches” within the black metal scene, and they’ll soon bring it to North America.
