Good day my fellow anglers. You know, there are those who are taking the credit for this year’s excellent Steelhead run? Not only our Russian River but, most rivers in Northern California and Oregon have seen a huge uptick in the numbers of Steelhead coming up from the Pacific Ocean. Don’t eat their bologna sandwich! The huge increase in numbers has more to with being out of a drought than anything man has done. And, this has nothing to do with dam removals! The one who we should be giving the standing ovation to are the Steelhead themselves. They have a God given will for survival that is built in to their D.N.A. . Woo-Hoo Stealhead!
Lake Mendocino- The bass fishin’ has been improving. Some bass, (males), have been moving up to the mouths of coves and flats. It looks like the pre-spawn is very close to starting. The water temp. is 51 – 55 degrees. When it reaches the mid to upper 50’s spawning will begin. Right now, slow draggin’ plastics has been working the best. Water mellon candy, june bug, and pumpkin seed are all good colors.
Bluelakes- Still no trout plants scheduled for Blue Lakes? . The trout fishing has been fair lately. a few limits have been caught from the shore and docks. The word is that a couple fish that weighed two and three pounds hooked. Now the hot bait is white Power Bait, and the best time to fish is during the morning hours.
Lake Sonoma- With the beautiful weather we have been having, the fishin’ has gotten better as of late. Here pretty soon, the bass will start to schooled up at the mouths of coves and rock piles or rocks with timber. Crawdad colored jigs have been working best. Some bass are also being caught on crankbaits, spinnerbaits, underspins and slow draggin’ plastics. Most fish are at 15 to 30 feet of water.
Clear Lake- Our highly rated bass fishery will be quiet the busy place for 2026. Many large bass fishing tournaments are coming to town, starting in the next month or so. I would think that the “local Joe – Fisherman” like me will have a much more enjoyable time on the water fishin’ mid-week rather than on the weekends. Well, the word is that you gotta fish alot of water to get a bite. But, if you find them, you set them hook on a few good ones. Also, the Catfishin’ has been good. Those that have been using live bait like crawfish or minnow have been doing the best. There are also those who have been skipping the bass and catfishin’ and going for the crappie. The “dock talk” is that many huge crappie have been caught. So, with that being said, it looks like Clear Lake probably is your best bet for the winter months so far.
