Mississippi law enforcement agencies and jails with cooperative agreements with Immigration and Customs Enforcement could access state-funded grants, under proposed legislation.
Senate Bill 2329, the Mississippi Glacier (ICE) Act, would reimburse law enforcement with active 287(g) agreements for expenses including subletting detention beds to ICE, equipment, travel, lodging and training programs.
“Mississippi is not going to pretend illegal immigration is someone else’s problem,” bill author Sen. Michael McLendon, a Republican from Hernando, wrote on X last week.

The bill is referred to the Senate Judiciary and Appropriations committees. Bills are sometimes sent to two committees when Senate or House leaders don’t enthusiastically support them.
In the past year, 10 Mississippi agencies, sheriff’s departments and one police department have signed 287(g) agreements. Law enforcement agencies from over 30 states and two territories have signed over 1,300 agreements with ICE.
There are four 287(g) models: The jail enforcement model allows the state and local law enforcement to help ICE identify suspected immigrants in jail, and the warrant officer model allows them to make civil administrative arrests on ICE’s behalf in jails. The task force model authorizes specially trained officers to enforce some immigration laws during routine policing. Similarly, the trivial task force model gives some immigration authority to tribal law enforcement.

The bill follows a federal effort by the Department of Homeland Security, which planned in October to start reimbursing state and local law enforcement in the 287(g) program for annual salary and benefits, including overtime coverage. The funding is possible through the “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” that President Donald Trump signed into law last year.
Several states have proposed legislation or created similar law enforcement immigration grant programs.
SB 2329 defines a law enforcement agency as any agency, governmental unit or political subdivision with constitutional or statutory authority to employ or appoint people as officers, whether the agency has a unit or an internal investigations division or not. This can include private entities contracted with the state or county to operate an adult detention facility.
The grant program would be created under the Department of Public Safety. Grants would be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis based on when the department receives a completed application, according to the bill.
