ROCHESTER, N.Y. — With Rochester City School District schools closed, many children needed a safe space while their parents were at work. To accommodate this, the city’s recreation centers opened two hours early on Friday.
News10NBC’s Declan Stablow visited the newly renovated Thomas P. Ryan R-Center on Webster Avenue. Staff said the schedule was designed to fit parents’ work hours, with centers open from noon to 7 p.m.
The R-Center features a gym for games like football and basketball, a manipulatives table for hands-on activities, study areas, and a new sensory-friendly area. Staff encouraged children to visit the center for real connections instead of staying home and staring at screens.
Jessica Privitera, who manages the Thomas Ryan R-Center, emphasized the importance of being available during weather events.
“All of our centers are unique, right? But here over at Thomas B. Ryan, one of the things that we pride ourselves on is the reintroduction and the fostering of the it takes a village mindset, right? A space for kids to be able to come in and know that they have other trusted adults within the community that they can rely on besides their parents and their caregivers,” Privitera said.
Each R-Center in Rochester offered two free hot meals to children, including lunch and dinner. It is free to take children to one of the city’s R-Centers if they need a place to go.
