News by : (News10NBC) -

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — Did you happen to see some red discoloration in the Genesee River near the Court Street Bridge Thursday? According to the State department of Environmental Conservation (DEC), it was diesel fuel.

Some viewers reached out to News10NBC Thursday about some sort of red liquid or discoloration in the Genesee River.

The DEC says a fuel oil company was making a delivery Thursday morning and admitted to hooking up the wrong pipe, which sent about 170 gallons of diesel fuel into a drainpipe. The DEC says an unknown amount of diesel fuel entered the river.

A spill contractor and the DEC are coordinating response efforts with the Rochester Fire Department and RG&E, the DEC says.

Due to site safety concerns, weather challenges, and other concerns, the DEC says it requested access to RG&E adjacent property near the river. Although the DEC had closer access, it was determined to be too dangerous for workers to try and install containment booms.

The DEC says plans are in place to look into the drainpipe, and the response will continue to be monitored to protect the environment.

Read the full statement from the DEC below:

“On Thursday, January 22, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Spill Response Experts responded to the area around Court Street Bridge in the City of Rochester after receiving reports of discoloration in the Genesee River. DEC’s Environmental Conservation Police Officer’s, working with the City of Rochester and the Rochester Fire Department, identified the discoloration to be diesel fuel.

A fuel oil company making a delivery earlier that morning admittedly hooked up to the wrong pipe sending approximately 170 gallons of diesel fuel into a drainpipe.  An unknown quantity of diesel fuel entered the river.

DEC and our spill contractor are closely coordinating response efforts with the Rochester Fire Department and RG&E. Due to site safety concerns, limited access, moving water, unstable ice, and weather and environmental challenges, DEC requested access to RG&E adjacent property near the river. Even with the closer access, site conditions were determined to be too dangerous for workers to attempt to install containment booms at this time.

Plans are in place to investigate the drainpipe and DEC will continue to monitor the response to ensure protection of the environment.”
