Broncos’ Bo Nix to miss 12 weeks with ankle surgery but aiming to return for OTAs, source says ...Middle East

News by : (The Denver Post) -

Bo Nix, of course, could’ve watched from the grass Sunday with the rest of his teammates. But that would’ve brought cameras. And shifted too many eyeballs towards him than he was comfortable with.

So the Broncos’ injured second-year QB watched the AFC Championship Game from a suite at Empower Field, wanting to not draw attention to himself. And beyond a few shots on the CBS broadcast, the camera was instead trained on Nix’s replacement: 29-year-old backup Jarrett Stidham, a West Texas boy who rolled in for the first start of his Denver career in a cowboy hat.

Come spring 2026, though, Nix will be back in a Broncos uniform and shoulder pads. A source confirmed to The Denver Post that Nix’s season-ending ankle surgery this past week will have a roughly 12-week timetable for recovery, and that doctors have pinpointed that Nix should be able to return to action by the Broncos’ organized team activities in late May.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter first reported that Nix had a 12-week timetable to return.

After the fractured ankle that shocked the entire city of Denver in a  33-30 overtime win over the Buffalo Bills on Saturday, Jan. 17, Nix flew to Birmingham, Alabama, for a Tuesday ankle surgery performed by Dr. Norman Waldrop of Andrews Sports Medicine. Broncos head coach Sean Payton said this week that the operation went well, and that he’d like Nix around the organization again as soon as he was able to be.

“Absolutely — all of our guys that have been injured are part of this team, and so, sooner the better,” Payton said Wednesday.

Nix offered his first public comments since the surgery on Thursday, with a lengthy caption on an Instagram post that said the last few days had been “hard to put into words.”

“What started as one of the most exciting games I’ve ever been a part of ended with some of the most devastating football news I’ve ever received,” Nix wrote. “This is not how I imagined my season would come to an end, but our season has been defined by overcoming adversity and responding to it.”

If Nix’s timeline goes according to plan, the Broncos’ starting quarterback will have ramped up well before the start of training camp in 2026.

Nix finished his second season in Denver with 3,931 passing yards and 30 total touchdowns against 11 interceptions, leading the NFL in passing attempts with 612. He shouldered much of the Broncos’ offense in the wild-card win over Buffalo, either dropping back or running the ball on 85% of Denver’s total attempts from scrimmage.
