"TikTok influencers are proclaiming that drinking a concoction of 8oz of warm water, pink Himalayan salt, lemon juice [with or without] ginger or honey every morning will aid weight loss, boost metabolism, detox the body, reduce bloating and improve hydration, given electrolytes from the salt," says Dr. Richele Corrado, DO, MPH, FACP, DABOM, an internal and obesity medicine physician with Revolution Medicine, Health & Fitness.

The promise of weight loss may sound appealing, but let's be honest: This pink salt mixture doesn't sound appetizing, and at least one doctor can confirm it is not. "I have to tell you that I tried this myself, and I don’t know how people can consume this, because the taste is not that great, at least to me," shares Dr. Mike Sevilla, MD, a family doctor.
Every doctor Parade spoke with said the same thing: "There is absolutely no scientific evidence to support this claim," Dr. Corrado insists.
As for Dr. Sevilla, who has first-hand experience with the concoction as well as patients who have tried it: “I have not seen this work," he reports.

Real talk: You essentially move waste through and out of your body by peeing and pooping, which your body can do without pink salt and lemon juice (water is a great tool, though).

Salt does have its place in a daily diet, but you're probably getting more than enough. Lemon juice can also have some mild benefits.
The pink salt trick can have several negative effects on your health, despite unsupported claims that it will supercharge weight loss. "This is not a benign treatment," Dr. Balazs says.

"No, absolutely not," Dr. Corrado states. Once again, the H2O in pink salt recipes is honestly the most effective piece of this whole trend.

Prioritize a nourishing diet. Dr. Corrado suggests limiting processed foods and sugars, which "drive overeating by hijacking hunger and reward pathways in the brain." Instead, she recommends opting for mostly whole, minimally processed foods, especially ones rich in fiber and protein to help increase satisfaction and reduce cravings.Exercise for health, not punishment. Dr. Corrado says exercise can prevent muscle loss and improve metabolism, mood, sleep and insulin sensitivity. And keep it fun! "The best movement is the kind you enjoy and can do consistently. Small bouts of activity throughout the day truly add up."Go to sleep. "Poor sleep increases hunger hormones, reduces fullness signals, worsens cravings and promotes fat storage, especially around the abdomen," Dr. Corrado reports. She suggests clocking 7 to 9 hours of sleep per night.Manage stress. Your mental health can steamroll physical health goals, including weight loss. "Stress and emotions strongly influence eating behaviors," Dr. Corrado says. "Learning to recognize emotional triggers and developing non-food coping strategies helps reduce cravings driven by habit, comfort or reward, not true hunger."Seek medical support. "For many people, lifestyle changes may not be enough due to powerful biological drivers of weight regain," Dr. Corrado says. You may be eligible for long-term medications to help you manage appetite. She suggests looking for qualified providers on the Obesity Action Coalition website.

How To Debloat Naturally
Diet. Yep, diet matters for bloating, too. "For many, the primary cause is fermentable carbohydrates and individual food sensitivity," Dr. Balazs explains. "I recommend looking for patterns linked to common triggers, such as legumes, cruciferous vegetables, onions, garlic, wheat-based products, carbonated beverages and alcohol."Hyrdate. Plain water will do the trick. "When you’re under-hydrated, your body holds onto water and sodium, which can worsen bloating," Dr. Corrado says. "Drinking water regularly helps the kidneys flush excess sodium and supports normal digestion, reducing fluid retention."Limit excess sodium/salt and ultra-processed foods. "High-sodium, highly processed foods cause the body to retain water to maintain electrolyte balance," Dr. Corrado says. "Reducing these foods, especially restaurant meals and packaged snacks, can noticeably decrease bloating within days."
In short, the pink salt trick can actually sabotage your natural de-puffing efforts rather than support them. Don't fall for it!
