Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is expected to speak at a rally against ICE and other federal immigration enforcement agencies Sunday.
The “ICE Out of Everywhere” rally, which will be held at the intersection of Ida B. Wells Drive and Michigan Avenue, is being hosted by multiple groups a day after 37-year-old Alex Pretti was shot and killed by a Border Patrol officer in Minneapolis. The Coalition Against the Trump Agenda and the Chicago Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression Coalition organized the protest in the aftermath of the shooting, which comes as the Senate mulls an appropriations bill to keep the federal government open beyond the end of January.
That bill, which includes funding for the Department of Homeland Security, has come under intense scrutiny from Democrats who want to see significant changes to the way ICE and Border Patrol are operating in American cities. A number of Democratic senators, including Sens. Dick Durbin and Tammy Duckworth, have said they will vote against the measure, which needs 60 votes to pass the Senate.
The appropriations bill must be passed by January 30 to avoid another potential government shutdown.
The shooting of Pretti was captured on numerous videos by witnesses at the scene, who documented events as Pretti took videos of ICE agents and assisted a woman in the street during a DHS operation Saturday morning.
Videos then show masked Border Patrol agents swarm around Pretti, pepper-spraying him and tackling him to the ground. Gunshots then ring out, with at least 8-to-10 shots fired according to footage from the scene.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, Pretti “approached” the agents and then “officers attempted to disarm the suspect but the armed suspect violently resisted.”
DHS claims the shots were defensive and that the agent was “fearing for his life and the lives and safety of fellow officers.”‘
Footage from the scene contradicts that narrative, and at no point in any of the videos is Pretti seen brandishing a weapon.
“The sickening lies told about our son by the administration are reprehensible and disgusting. Alex is clearly not holding a gun when attacked by Trump’s murdering and cowardly ICE thugs,” Pretti’s parents, Michael and Susan Pretti, said in a statement. “He has his phone in his right hand and his empty left hand is raised above his head while trying to protect the woman ICE just pushed down all while being pepper sprayed.”
Pretti owned a handgun and had a concealed-carry permit in Minnesota, Minneapolis police said. His family told The Associated Press they did not know him to ever carry the gun.
DHS has announced they will investigate the shooting, a departure from normal protocols that would involve the FBI coordinating on the investigation, according to the Associated Press.
