Former TCU head coach Gary Patterson is heading to the Big Ten for the first time in his already decorated coaching career.
The 65-year-old Patterson, who is the all-time winningest head coach in TCU football history with 181 victories, was hired on Friday by former Big 12 coaching rival Lincoln Riley as USC’s new defensive coordinator. Riley, who has been the Trojans’ head coach since 2022 after leaving Oklahoma, made the big announcement about joining forces with the noted defensive mastermind.
“We are excited to welcome Gary and his family to USC,” said Riley in a statement. “As a Hall of Fame coach, who is one of the game’s most highly regarded defensive minds, he brings a wealth of success and experience to our program. His impact will be immediate, elevating our defense and strengthening the culture we’ve built. We’re proud to welcome him to the Trojan Family.”
Patterson comes to Los Angeles with that fresh Hall of Fame tag attached to him, having been named to the 2026 College Football Hall of Fame class. He led the TCU program for more than 2 decades, compiling a glossy .696 winning percentage while winning 4 conference coach of the year awards. Patterson, with his sturdy defensive background from a coaching career that began all the way back in 1982, was named the National Coach of the Year by the AP in 2009 and 2014.
He walked away from TCU as a legend in Fort Worth, going 181-79. The Horned Frogs captured 6 conference titles under Patterson, who won at least 10 games in 11 different seasons at TCU.
Interestingly, Patterson will now coach under Riley, who went 5-0 against Patterson when he was the head coach at Oklahoma. Patterson won’t have to worry about that now, with the 2 coaches on the same sideline starting this fall in Los Angeles.
Patterson went 11-6 in 17 bowl appearances while at TCU, so not only has he won a lot of games in his time, he’s proven to be a successful coach on the big stage.
Now, Patterson, who took the 2025 season off after being a consultant at Baylor in 2024, will be on the biggest stage imaginable, at a blue blood program in the Big Ten.
