The chill of the Carlsbad rink was part of Sayuri Ohgi’s childhood before she even knew how to lace her skates.

At 4 years old, she stepped onto the ice at Icetown — now Ice Realm — alongside her mother, discovering an early love and aptitude for skating.

“I was inspired to start skating after watching my mom skate,” Ohgi said. “Some of my fondest skating memories are of skating alongside my mom, and I’ve continued skating ever since.”

What began as a childhood pastime quickly grew into a passion. By age 6, she participated in her first competition — skating to “Reflection” from Disney’s “Mulan.” That early spark has carried her to the stage of Feld Entertainment’s “Disney on Ice,” where she now performs in the latest production, “Let’s Dance,” at Pechanga Arena this week.

“Seeing the audience engaged and enjoying themselves is one of the most fulfilling parts of my work,” said Ohgi, who joined Feld Entertainment in 2024. “I especially value the little moments of connection with kids who are experiencing the show — whether it’s them singing along or getting up to dance with us.”

The production features stories from “Frozen 2,” “Wish,” “The Lion King,” “The Little Mermaid” and “Moana.” Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Goofy take on the role of DJs, leading sing‑alongs and mixing music throughout the performance.

“One of my favorite parts of this show is how interactive it is with the audience,” Ohgi said. “We have DJ‑led sing‑alongs throughout the performance that keep everyone engaged and dancing. ‘Let’s Dance’ is truly a unique production — it’s designed to offer something for everyone.”

Although she may eventually pursue a career in healthcare — she holds a master’s degree in health sciences from Johns Hopkins University — Ohgi said she is focused on enjoying her time on the ice.

This week, she is especially excited to perform in front of a hometown crowd.

“I feel incredibly grateful to perform in San Diego,” she said. “Having my family, friends, and my coach there to support me means everything — it’s a powerful reminder of why I continue to skate. I hope audiences enjoy seeing their favorite stories brought to life and experience a little Disney magic during the show.”

Disney on Ice’s production of “Let’s Dance” will take place from Thursday, Jan. 22 to Sunday, Jan. 25 at Pechanga Arena San Diego at 3500 Sports Arena Blvd. Tickets can be purchased online at AXS.com or in-person at the venue box office.
