Nebraska def. Illinois, 194.5-177.5 Iowa def. Illinois, 193-179 Iowa def. Nebraska, 216-156The Big Ten double duals between Illinois, Iowa, and Nebraska concluded on Saturday in Champaign, IL. Iowa emerged the big winner of the weekend, beating both Illinois and Nebraska. Meanwhile, Nebraska downed Illinois in their meet.
Though Illinois wound up on the losing end of the team battles, they kicked off Saturday with a big win in the 200 medley relay. Sophia Paduano (26.37), Kayla Duran (29.31), Chloe Diner (24.58), and Isabella Wilhelm (23.16) combined for a 1:43.42.
Following her swim on the winning medley relay, Paduano then went on to win the 100 back, clocking a 57.24. Paduano holds a season and career best of 54.50, which was swum at the Iowa Hawkeye Invitational back ion November.
The Illini then put up a 1-2 finish in the 100 breast, where Chloe Diner won in 1:03.10, while Kayla Duran was 1:04.10 for 2nd. Both Diner and Duran are sophomores and were standouts for Illinois last year as freshmen. They are the two fastest 100 breaststrokers in Illini program history, with Duran holding the program record with a 1:00.39, and Diner standing at #2 all-time with a 1:01.07.
Diner would go on to win the 200 IM as well, swimming a 2:01.79. Diner is the Illinois program record holder in the 200 IM with her career best mark of 1:58.32.
Illinois made it a sweep of the breaststroke events, seeing Sara Jass post a 2:18.86 to win the 200 breast.
Nebraska followed up Illinois’ 1-2 finish with a 1-2 punch of their own. Aurora Zanin took the 200 fly in 2:04.82, narrowly beating out teammate Jazmyn Lunn, who came in 2nd with a 2:05.18.
Husker Gena Jorgenson was excellent on the day. An NCAA All-American last season, Jorgenson first won the 200 back with a time of 2:02.84. She then went on to win the 500 free in 4:58.04, finishing as the only swimmer in the field under 5:00. It got the job done, but that swim was well off Jorgenson’s career best of 4:39.31.
Beatrix Tanko was another Husker winner on the day, taking the 100 fly in a very tight race over Diner. Tanko clocked a 54.84, hitting the wall just 0.02 seconds ahead of Diner, who held a slim lead at the halfway point of the race.
Iowa had their fair share of wins as well, including the final event of the meet: the 200 free relay. Payton Flowers (23.51), Rachel Dildine (23.76), Audrey Olen (23.23), and Ella Jean Kelly (23.00) combined for a 1:33.50, winning the race by 2 seconds.
Flowers was a double individual event winner on the day, taking the 100 free in 50.94. Flowers holds a career best of 49.30 in the 100 free, which she swam back at the Iowa Invite in November. Her other win on Saturday came in the 50 free, where she stopped the clock in 23.00.
Jenna Kerr was another Hawkeye winner on the day, swimming a 1:51.01 to take the 200 free.
Iowa was also excellent on the diving boards, winning two out of three diving events. Lainey Woodward won 1-meter with a score of 312.05, also taking 3-meter with a final tally of 318.65. Platform diving went to Nebraska’s Kelsey Clairmont, who posted a final score of 259.00.
