The Lions Have a New Offensive Coordinator — It’s Former Bears Coaching Candidate Drew Petzing ...Middle East

The Detroit Lions are bringing in a new offensive coordinator for the 2026 NFL season. And the name might be familiar to some Chicago Bears fans. Well, at least the ones who were neck deep wading through the Bears’ head coaching candidates last offseason. Drew Petzing, who interviewed for Chicago’s head coaching vacancy last January, is joining the Lions as their new offensive play caller.

The Lions are hiring Drew Petzing as their offensive coordinator, sources tell me and @RapSheet.Petzing, 38, kept Arizona’s offense afloat this past season despite a rash of injuries, including at QB. Now, a huge opportunity with Detroit’s high-octane offense. pic.twitter.com/DViqn2d5cC

Who is Drew Petzing and why did the Lions hire him?

This is what Patrick had to say about Drew Petzing when writing up the then-Cardinals assistant’s Bears coaching candidate profile:

Similar to the other candidates with an offensive background, Petzing fits the Bears’ top need: an offensive-minded head coach who can be paired with Caleb Williams to oversee his development. Likewise, he lacks previous head coaching experience, which raises the question of whether he can run the offense and the rest of the shop.

Petzing has done a tremendous job of developing a smash-mouth rushing attack in Arizona and a respectable—and underrated—passing attack. Arizona’s rushing attack ranked first in the NFC West in yards, yards per attempt, touchdowns, explosive runs, 40-plus-yard runs, and first downs. Pretty impressive.

As for the passing game, Petzing helped Kyler Murray turn in a respectable season, despite Murray’s penchant for turnovers significantly contributing to a 2-5 finish that cost them a shot at the playoffs. Murray threw for 3,851 yards (11th) and 21 touchdowns (13th).

Drew Petzing takes over for John Morton, who was one-and-done as Ben Johnson’s replacement in Detroit. Petzing spent the last three seasons as the Arizona Cardinals’ offensive coordinator. And while he does not appear to have ties to Lions Head Coach Dan Campbell, Petzing has a connection to Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson having coached together while at Boston College. That makes for a fun, new wrinkle that we can discuss when the Lions and Bears renew acquaintances next season.
