The NC State men and women achieved a dominant victory over UNC on Friday at the Koury Natatorium in Chapel Hill, breaking six pool records in the process.

With their wins in 2026, NC State improves their all-time record to 44 – 48 on the men’s side and the women’s record to 16 – 39.

Women’s Meet Recap

The women’s meet started off with a sweep of the 200 medley relay by the NC State team who won all but two swimming events.

The 200 medley relay team of Leah Shackley (23.82), Eneli Jefimova (26.52), Erika Pelaez (23.05), and Olivia Nel (21.33) swam 1:34.72 to beat their ‘B’ relay’s time of 1:36.53 by more than two seconds.  The UNC ‘A’ relay swam 1:38.32 to finish 3rd overall.

In the 400 free relay, the Wolfpack swept the top two results again after the ‘A’ team of Pelaez (47.96), Cassie Moses (47.67), Lily King (47.76), and Nel (47.82) swam 3:11.21 to win by more than six seconds over their ‘B’ relay’s time of 3:17.78, breaking the pool record in the process.

The Wolfpack were led by four two-event winners during the meet. Kennedy Noble won the 100 backstroke and 200 IM for NC State, swimming 51.52 in the 100 back, a new season best time, and 1:57.06 in the 200 IM.

Eneli Jefimova followed up Noble’s 100 backstroke win with the top time in the 100 breaststroke, swimming 58.65 to be the only swimmer under 1:00 in the event. She went on to also swim the top time in the 200 breaststroke, touching in 2:10.05 to beat UNC’s Mary Macaulay by more than a second.

Both sprint events went to senior Cassie Moses, who broke the pool record in the 100 free with her final time of 48.07. She also won the 50 free in 22.07, tying with teammate Lily Christianson for the top time.

Finally, sophomore Leah Shackley won two events in the 2nd half of the meet. She started with the top time in the 200 back of 1:51.45. Shackley came in a little more than half-a-second ahead of Noble, who set a season best 1:52.13 en route to silver.

Shackley went on to also pick up the win in the 100 fly, stopping the clock in 51.85 to lead an NC State sweep of the top four places. Lily Christianson finished 2nd in 52.27, which was a season best swim.

Katherine Helms and Erika Pelaez were the other individual event winners for NC State. Helms set a new personal best in the 1000 freestyle of 9:41.55 to earn the event win by just under a second over teammate Emma Hastings who also swam a personal best of 9:42.42.

Pelaez led an NC State sweep of the top three in the 200 free, swimming a season best 1:44.03 to come out about a second ahead of Lily King‘s 1:44.91 in 2nd, which was also a season best swim.

UNC won two individual swimming events along with both diving events. They started with the top time in the 200 butterfly courtesy of Taylor Bloom, who set a new personal best 1:55.19 to move up to 20th in the nation this season as she tries to earn her first NCAA qualification. This was an eight tenth drop from her previous best of 1:55.98 from the Gamecock Invite in November. She came into the season at 1:56.19 from last year’s ACC Championships.

The Tar Heels also won the 500 free with Maren Conze‘s personal best 4:44.82. This was more than a second drop from the 4:46.05 she swam at the Gamecock Invite in 2024.

They also picked up wins in both diving events courtesy of sophomore Sofia Knight. She dove personal bests in both events, scoring 312.45 in the 1 meter and 333.38 in the 3 meter.

Men’s Recap

The men’s meet saw four pool records, all from the NC State Wolfpack. The men started the day with a pool record in the 200 medley relay with the team of Quintin McCarty (21.04), Arsen Kozhakhmetov (23.96), Aiden Hayes (20.24), Drew Salls (18.47). They touched in 1:23.71, beating their ‘B’ team’s time of 1:24.19.

They immediately followed that swim up with another pool record in the 1000 freestyle. Max Carlsen won the event in 8:42.38, a new school and pool record time that will move him up to 5th in the NCAA this season.

Carlsen also went on to win the 500 freestyle in 4:15.00, just off his season  best 4:14.79 from the NC State Invitational.

Quintin McCarty broke the pool record in the 50 free at 19.02, two tenths off his season best 18.81 from the NC State Invite in November.

McCarty was also a part of the final pool record of the day, the men’s 400 freestyle relay. The team of Jerry Fox (41.80), Kaii Winkler (41.63), McCarty (41.62), and Hudson Williams (41.77) swam 2:46.82, coming in more than seven seconds ahead of the UNC ‘A’ team’s time of 2:54.13.

The other three relay swimmers also won at least one individual event. Winkler won two events for the Wolfpack, taking the top time in the 200 free (1:33.62) and the 100 fly (45.99). Jerry Fox won the 100 free (42.14), and Hudson Williams won the 100 back (45.53).

Gavin Keogh and Daniel Diehl rounded out the event wins for NC State with Keogh taking the top time in the 200 back (1:42.00) and Diehl winning the 200 IM (1:43.89).

North Carolina won three swimming events and both diving events. Their first win came in the 100 breaststroke with Ben Delmar‘s 52.68 winning by more than half-a-second over Arsen Kozhakhmetov‘s 53.22 for NC State.

Delmar also won the 200 breaststroke in 1:54.09, more than two seconds ahead of teammate Xavier Ruiz‘s 1:56.42 for 2nd.

Seb Lunak was the other Tar Heels winner, taking the top spot in the 200 fly at 1:43.62, more than a second ahead of teammate Colin Whelehan‘s 2nd place time of 1:44.70.

Both diving events went to Carter Loftin, who scored 306.45 on the 1 Meter and 328.50 on the 3 Meter.

UNC’s next meet is the UNC Invitational from February 4-6th in Chapel Hill.
