NFL COACHING NEWS AND RUMORS — There is so much Bears-specifc content that I want to do before now and tomorrow’s kickoff. However, there are some NFL headlines (and some Bears-adjacent things) that popped up today that I didn’t want to squeeze into Sunday’s Bullets and wasn’t willing to wait until Monday to write up. So I’m pushing it out the door now while I have a moment.
John Harbaugh makes it official with the New York Giants
News of John Harbaugh signing on to be the next head coach of the New York Football Giants sprung on Thursday night. And yet, there was no official word on Friday confirming the move. And on Saturday morning, the buzz was that the two sides were still ironing out some details. But by Saturday afternoon, Harbaugh to the Giants was a done deal:

— Tom Pelissero (@TomPelissero) January 17, 2026And just like that, we have NFL coaching news that results in the first hire of the offseason.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter gets the first word from Harbaugh:
“This is the New York Giants. I’m proud and honored to be the head coach of this historic franchise, and especially excited to work with the Mara and Tisch families. But most of all, I can’t wait to get started with the great players on this football team to see what we can accomplish together.”
The Baltimore Ravens went 180-113 during the 18 years of the John Harbaugh era. But after missing the playoffs, the Ravens fired Harbaugh and are on their own search for a head coach. Harbaugh is one of the most respected coaches in football, but he will have his work cut out for him trying to revitalize a team that has gone 13-38 since the start of the 2023 season and has just three winning seasons since hoisting the Lombardi Trophy after Super Bowl XLVI in February 2012.

Matt LaFleur and the Packers inching closer to a deal
It sure seems like the Green Bay Packers will run it back for another season with Matt LaFleur as their head coach:
Spoke to a league source informed on the negotiations happening in Green Bay regarding Matt LaFleur’s extension. “Everyone is being dramatic. It’s getting done. Dumb organizations do dumb things, the Packers aren’t dumb.”
— Dianna Russini (@diannarussini.bsky.social) January 17, 2026 at 8:49 AMESPN’s Adam Schefter reports (via Twitter/X) the Packers are working to keep LaFleur as their head coach. I imagine that General Manaer Brian Gutekunst, who is also heading into the final year of his contract, will get a deal that lines him up with the head coach. There was a bunch of uncertainty surrounding LaFleur’s future after the Packers coughed up a 21-3 lead to the Chicago Bears last Saturday. However, it seems like the gang is staying together in Green Bay.
BEARS-RAMS PREVIEW: TWO CLOSERS, ONE FROZEN STAGE
I’m sure this news pleases Ben Johnson, as he is on the record saying how much he enjoys beating LaFleur twice a year. That he did so in Year 1 as the Bears’ head coach pleases Bears fans. LaFleur still has a decided edge when it comes to coaching against Chicago’s football team. But Johnson’s arrival closes that gap in the rivalry.
Other NFL Coaching News and Rumors
Let’s round up the rest of the NFL coaching news and rumors…
This is fun:Coordinators interviewing for head coaching jobs across the league are squaring off against each other today: pic.twitter.com/8mPhpy6YPg
— Adam Schefter (@AdamSchefter) January 17, 2026 NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero reports that Packers DC Jeff Hafley “has emerged as a frontrunner” to land the Miami Dolphins head coaching job. More interviews are on the horizon, so this isn’t a done deal. But that Pelissero pegs Hafley as the leading candidate is noteworthy. And if that is how the cookie crumbles, I hope the Packers don’t swipe Bears DBs Coach Al Harris to be their DC. Harris was a standout Packers cornerback from 2003-09, making back-to-back Pro Bowls in 2007 and 2008. CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones notes that the Atlanta Falcons are Rooney Rule compliant and can hire a head coach whenever they please. With two-time NFL Coach of the Year Kevin Stefanski meeting with the ream on Saturday, Jones hints that the Falcons could be the next team to hire a head coach. Bears fans should be keeping an eye on the Falcons situation, as Atlanta could pair Stefanski (or another head coaching candidate) with Bears Assistant General Manager Ian Cunningham:been saying for a week+… multiple sources in the NFL feel it’s going to be Stefanski and Cunningham in Atlanta for the Falcons could things change? of course.. but those two are the leaders to take over
— Zach Klein (@ZachKleinWSB) January 17, 2026 Former Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel is set to interview with the Las Vegas Raiders for their head coach vacancy. This is a timely interview, too, seeing that Raiders execs will be in Miami to watch Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza play in the national title game. Mendoza figures to be the No. 1 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Pairing him with McDaniel could make the Raiders fun to watch. More NFL coaching news that has Bears-adjacent vibes? Sure!
