Wow. Well, the New York Mets certainly had an answer ready to losing out on Kyle Tucker last night.
Bo Bichette is headed to New York:
Infielder Bo Bichette and the New York Mets are in agreement on a three-year, $126 million contract, sources tell ESPN. After losing the Kyle Tucker sweepstakes, the Mets pivot quickly and get one of the best players left on the market. @WillSammon was first on the deal.

— Jon Heyman (@JonHeyman) January 16, 2026So Bichette, 27, goes the short-term, opt-outs-aplenty route, perhaps not finding the monster long-term deal out there this offseason with the end of the CBA looming. It’s also possible that, for the same reason, he found a short-term deal with an early opt-out to be desirable. In the meantime, he guarantees himself an enormous salary for 2026, and a plenty large enough guarantee if things really go sideways.
The Mets will once again be loaded in 2026, though that was true in 2025 and the year did not play out as hoped. (At least the Cubs are in the NL Central.)
One big curiosity now: with Bichette off the board to a team that wasn’t going to be trading for an infielder from the Cubs, do the calls on Nico Hoerner and/or Matt Shaw get any more voluminous? I am still pretty lukewarm on the idea of the Cubs actually moving either guy, but if some team gets desperate to add an infielder, who knows.
There will be other market fallout here, and I expect we’ll have more soon.
