The inaugural U.S. Short Course World Trials kicked off with an abbreviated finals session, even by distance day standards. There were two events on offer today at FMC Natatorium: the women’s 1500-meter freestyle and men’s 800-meter freestyle, both of which only featured one heat each.
Women’s 1500-Meter Freestyle — Timed Final

Katie McCarthy (UOFM) — 16:10.50Minnesota senior Katie McCarthy was the only swimmer entered in the women’s 1500-meter freestyle this evening. In her own time trial to open the trials, McCarthy powered to a 16:10.50, descending each 50 from the 1300-meter check to the finish. Her time was under the Beijing ‘B’ qualification time and ranks her 14th fastest in the world this year per the in-arena announcers.
Men’s 800-Meter Freestyle — Timed Final
World Record: 7:20.46 — Daniel Wiffen, Ireland (2023) World Junior Record: 7:30.47 — Johannes Liebmann, Germany (2025) American Record: 7:30.41 — David Johnston, United States (2022) U.S. Open Record: 7:29.50 — Zalan Sarkany, Hungary (2025) Beijing ‘A’ Qualification Time: 7:42.39Final:
Ryan Erisman (CAL) — 7:34.84 Leonardo Barbieri Alcantara (BAMA) — 7:47.31 Jakub Poliacik (VT) — 7:51.70 Luke Brennan (UOFM) — 7:53.96There was not a full heat in the men’s 800-meter freestyle final either, with four swimmers taking to the blocks for the second and last event of the evening. Even so, the winner of the race was all but a certainty well before the finish. Cal sophomore Ryan Erisman jetted out to an early lead that he never gave up. Erisman won the national title in the long-course 800-meter freestyle this summer in Irvine and this was his first official attempt at the short-course meter version of the race at a competition.
Erisman won the race in 7:34.84, easily getting under the ‘A’ qualification time. The swim also makes him the 4th fastest performer in the world this year. Leonardo Barbieri Alcantara also sits in the top 10 for the 800-meter freestyle season rankings after his 7:37.47 at the José Finkel Trophy–he’s now 6th with Erisman’s time tonight moving him down a slot. Alcantara finished second in Westmont tonight, over 12 seconds behind Erisman but used a strong back half to overcome an early deficit to Jakub Poliacik and Luke Brennan.
