Bregman and Winning, Ballesteros and Long, the 10th Anniversary Party Begins, and Other Cubs Bullets ...Middle East

The Kyle Tucker signing is getting all the attention in baseball this morning, and understandably so. Lots more to say about that soon …

If it sounded like Alex Bregman was saying the word “winning” a lot yesterday, that’s because he was. Jon Greenberg counted, and it was the 4th, 10th, 29th, and the 38th word he said. Again, and again, and again, winning was his focus. It’s easy to say it, of course, but it was pretty clear throughout that it’s just … kinda actually sincerely all he cares about when it comes to baseball. Bregman wants to play the game and he wants to win.

Winning. Winning. Winning. Sole focus. t.co/ioA8eVX6Yw

— Bleacher Nation (@BleacherNation) January 15, 2026 In fairness to Bregman, winning is all he’s known. The guy has been to the playoffs literally every single season since 2017. Let’s hope that streak continues for the next five years. A couple things I thought about yesterday when contemplating the lineup and various rotations of position players now that Alex Bregman is in the fold. Moises Ballesteros, to me, needs to be the just-about-every-day designated hitter right out of the gate this season, especially after Owen Caissie was traded. Yes, you could occasionally spell Ballesteros on days when you want to give Bregman or anyone else a half-day off (with Matt Shaw playing whichever spot defensively), but mostly, I just want Ballesteros’s bat in the lineup on the regular. I don’t want the DH spot, with this particular group, to be a rotating cast of match-ups and rest. Things have shaken out perfectly for the Cubs to REALLY give Ballesteros a run at the spot, when it previously looked like it might be a challenge in the years ahead to incorporate his bat if he wasn’t going to be catching regularly. The second thing that came to mind when I was thinking about all that: the Owen Caissie trade didn’t just clear up that path for Ballesteros, it also cleared a path for the Cubs to actually use Jonathon Long eventually at the big league level. If his is another bat they really believe in, then he can be the next-man-up for that DH spot if Ballesteros isn’t quite ready or gets hurt. We’ll never know for sure how the Cubs would’ve coordinated in a pre-trade world if there were an injury to Michael Busch at first base, too, but now we know with some confidence that’s probably going to be Long. He also has the ability to back up in left field (depending on Kevin Alcantara’s readiness/role), which, again, would’ve otherwise probably been Caissie. I’m not saying Long is better than Caissie or that the Cubs preferred him as the back-up at these various spots, mind you. I’m just saying that now his path, if something happens, is much more clear.
