Merklinger was a redshirt freshman last year for the Volunteers, where he was the backup for Joey Aguilar after the two battled for the starting job. During his two seasons in Knoxville, he was 19-of-33 for 221 yards and two touchdowns.
Hailing from Georgia, Merklinger was a 4-star recruit according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings in the 2024 class. He was the No. 11 quarterback in the class, and was the No. 160 player in the class. He signed with the Volunteers over other big time programs such as Georgia, Miami, Ole Miss among many others.
The situation at UConn provides him an opportunity to compete for a starting position under first-year coach Jason Candle, who is coming off an outstanding tenure as the coach at Toledo. Bringing in a guy with Merklinger’s talent is a huge get for Candle, and could help him build off the momentum that Jim Mora built at UConn, as the program has won nine games in consecutive seasons.
