As the NHL season rolls along, there are two significant dates coming up on the league calendar. The first of those, February 4, isn’t only special because it’s Denis Savard’s birthday (and mine), but there’s an Olympic trade freeze that goes into effect. That trade freeze expires on February 22, which gives teams less than two weeks to make a deal before the March 6 trade deadline.
For a few veterans on the Blackhawks’ roster, there’s a chance they have a conversation with Kyle Davidson in the coming weeks — if they haven’t already — about their immediate future in Chicago. One of those veterans is the longest tenured player on the roster: Connor Murphy. Murphy has been a terrific leader here for years. And he’s played on some really, really bad teams. He’s now in the final year of his contract and there’s interest in him around the league. Mark Lazerus wrote a good column on Murphy potentially leaving his “home.”
On the ice, in the room and in the community, Blackhawks defenseman Connor Murphy has quietly become a Chicago staple. He's built a career here, a life here. Chicago is home. But for how much longer? My column: t.co/qP3HNCrCom
— Mark Lazerus (@MarkLazerus) January 14, 2026 Frank Nazar was skating before the rest of the Blackhawks again on Wednesday. He has been on the ice for a bit now as he works his way back. Hopefully we see him able to join the Hawks in game action before the Olympics.Frank Nazar is in a gray shirt skating on the other rink. Blashill said he'll have a better idea of Nazar's timeline once he starts practicing with the team.
— Tracey Myers (@Tramyers_NHL) January 14, 2026 Connor Bedard was back on the ice on Wednesday after missing Monday night’s game. Unfortunately, Teuvo Teräväinen was not. He left the game with an upper-body injury after the first period. After practice, head coach Jeff Blashill said Teräväinen will not play on Thursday night. Here’s how the Hawks lined up at their practice:#Blackhawks practice lineup:Greene-Bedard-BurakovskyBertuzzi-Dickinson-MikheyevDonato-Moore-LardisFoligno-Dach-SlaggertVlasic-CrevierKaiser-LevshunovGrzelcyk-MurphyKnightSoderblomOut: Teravainen (upper-body), Lafferty (illness)
— Charlie Roumeliotis (@CRoumeliotis) January 14, 2026 Good stuff here from Kalen Lumpkins at the Chicago Tribune on Nick Lardis getting more comfortable in the NHL — even if some of the guys on the other bench (understandably) have him awestruck.Nick Lardis is settling into the NHL since his call up in December. He's played Sidney Crosby, Alex Ovechkin and Connor McDavid, so no shame that he gets a little starstruck."That was pretty special. As the games go on, it feels a little more normal." t.co/Ktv4TWmdXR
— Kalen Lumpkins (@kalenalumpkins) January 14, 2026 The NHL put together a… fun? video of Artyom Levshunov‘s 5:33 shift on Monday night. It’s always fun to wake up to a bunch of friends sending it to me via DM because one of my tweets shows up during the post.A post shared by NHL (@nhl)
Really good read here from Ben Pope on the Blackhawks’ penalty kill. I hate pointing out that they’re perfect this calendar year because I absolutely believe in jinxes, but the Hawks’ PK has been fantastic the entire season. Some Blackhawks were initially skeptical of Jeff Blashill's penalty-killing system. They're believers now. The PK ranks 2nd in the NHL at 85.2%. It's 16-for-16 in January.New story breaking down why the push-down PK has been so effective: t.co/MWNr91uJMN
— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) January 14, 2026 Interesting news at the college level on Wednesday. Unlike the ridiculous unrestricted free agency frenzy that college football experiences, the NCAA has put some guardrails in place for a transfer window for men’s hockey. Which actually makes sense.NCAA has adopted a new transfer windows for Div. I men's hockey.15 day window begins Monday after the NCAA title game.New 15-day window was also adopted for when a coaching change occurs.NCAA is asking the women's hockey committee to consider supporting similar changes. t.co/d2OcoRy5AI
— Matt Wellens (@mattwellens) January 14, 2026 The Buffalo Sabres will be without forward Josh Dunne for the next 4-6 weeks due to a mid-body injury. The Montreal Canadiens signed forward Alexandre Texier to a 2-year, $5M contract extension ($2.5M AAV). The New Jersey Devils are reportedly actively shopping veteran defenseman Dougie Hamilton right now and things on the ice are not going as well as anyone wants. Their GM met with the media on Wednesday and took some responsibility for the struggles. We’ll see if this leads to any other significant changes. From Pierre LeBrun on the Hamilton situation on Thursday morning:There’s hope of getting a trade done before the Feb. 4 Olympics trade freeze, but there’s certainly no guarantee of that, given the contract involved.
