Get ready for a wave of new Chicago Cubs prospects.
Starting today, Major League Baseball organizations may finally make officially official the deals they’ve wink-wink had in place, in some cases, for years. International amateurs are eligible to sign for a portion of each club’s allotted (and hard-capped) bonus pool, officially becoming professional baseball players.
Although this period runs through December 15, most of the top prospects will sign today. Moreover, the Chicago Cubs’ bonus pool ($6,679,200 for the Cubs, about $1.3 million less than the largest pools, which go to small-market clubs) is expected to mostly be used up by the close of business today. So it’s a big day no matter what. (Though the Cubs can trade for more bonus pool space later on if necessary, as they did late in the last year to secure a recently-made-available prospect in Bryant Ciriaco.)
This year, rather than concentrating their bonus pool among just a few prospects, the Cubs have reportedly really spread things out, with just one prospect set to get a seven-figure deal, but then a whole lot of prospects set to get six-figure deals. Not something the Cubs have done under the current system, and I’m very intrigued to see how it’ll work out in the end.
I’ll track the Cubs’ reported signings, as well as any other major news, below as the day goes on …
* * *
Baseball America will be one of the best sources for signing information today, and they list the Cubs prospects in the expected class (I believe of only the above-$10,000 signings – i.e. the ones that count against the bonus pool) so far as:
Yadier Muñoz, SS, Dominican RepublicJaims Martinez, SS, CubaYanfri Serrano, OF, Dominican RepublicEduardo Gonzalez, SS, VenezuelaJohan Geraldo, SS, Dominican RepublicFranyel Almanzar, SS, Dominican RepublicXavier Cadiz, SS/CF, VenezuelaLuis Tomas, SS, Dominican Republic
Those look to be roughly in the order of the size of the player’s bonus, which BA has reported is $1.2 million for Muñoz at the top of the class. The class will ultimately include many, many more names. Francys Romero indicates that the volume of signings today could be upwards of 17 for the Cubs.
