Southern cuisine offers a unique dining experience for UA students coming from across the country. In Tuscaloosa, restaurants thrive off of a sports-driven atmosphere and restaurants adapt their typical style, creating dishes that relate to game day.
Throughout Alabama, Baumhower’s Victory Grille is a dominant sports bar and grill, which first opened in 1981 by former University of Alabama football star, Bob Baumhower. This iconic Tuscaloosa sports bar is known for its Buffalo-style wings, showing dominance in both cuisine and sports culture.
The atmosphere in the Tuscaloosa Baumhower’s is distinct, housing sports related decorations unique to the location. The lobby of the restaurant also showcases a cardboard cutout of retired Alabama football coach, Nick Saben.
“Especially like at the sports bar I went to, there’s Alabama stuff everywhere, football stuff everywhere” said Trinity Hereford, a freshman studying finance. “I’m assuming that’s Tuscaloosa based or around this area, because the Baumhower’s in Huntsville, where I live, we don’t have that.”
Rama Jama’s is also a popular game day destination for many sports lovers due to its proximity to the stadium. Micheal Hebron, owner of Rama Jama’s, said the menu is traditional, but the sports atmosphere and memories is what makes the restaurant unique.
“It became a part of my life. My daughter came to school in 2013 and we would come here and eat when I visited,” Hebron said. “And it’s kind of how I learned about the history and tradition of Alabama football.”
The restaurant is also known for its Mimosa Madness on Saturdays, a game day promotional event that offers 2-for-1 bottles of champagne. However, this trademark was not intentionally created.
“Mimosa Madness evolved from having too much product and me just trying to clear some inventory, and then it stuck, and now it’s branded,” Hebron said.
Local businesses are not the only restaurants locals are raving about. Popular Southern chains only exist regionally in Southern states, with classics such as Waffle House, Whataburger and Taco Casa. As an in-state student, Hereford has experienced Southern cuisine throughout her entire life, but after coming to Tuscaloosa, she realized that many of the chains and local businesses were different.
“I definitely forget that other places don’t have things that I see every day,” Hereford said.
The Taco Casa location in Tuscaloosa opened in 1974 by former Alabama football player Rod Wilkin, continuing the connection of the sports and hospitality industry.
“I live in kind of a small town, so there’s a lot more here, even like chain restaurants. We don’t have a Texas Roadhouse, and I guess they have Taco Casa, that’s like a very big thing here,” said Susan Pittman, a freshman majoring in psychology.
Traditional chains in the south are not available to consumers in other states, and the locations in Tuscaloosa are an even more unique experience in dining. Founded from a sports-driven industry, chain restaurants are an experience that entertain college students and locals alike.
With sports fans continuing to consume Southern staples, the hospitality industry in Tuscaloosa flourishes in its rich history and cuisine. Restaurants are a gathering place for memories, but Tuscaloosa’s unique atmosphere makes the experience even more special.
