Last week, Dan Orlovsky gave the Bears no shot to win their Wild Card matchup with the Green Bay Packers, saying the Packers would “win handily.”
This week, another former NFL quarterback-turned-analyst doesn’t like Chicago’s chances when they host the Los Angeles Rams in the Divisional Round on Sunday night at Soldier Field. On Up And Adams with Kay Adams, former first-overall pick and 14-year NFL quarterback Alex Smith said that the Rams man “Hang 50” on the Bears.
Here’s the clip.

“I think the Bears are the weakest team in the NFC left…Matthew Stafford and Sean McVay might hang 50 on the Bears,” Alex Smith told Kay Adams.
When talking about the Rams’ offensive performance in the Wild Card round against Carolina – a 34-31 win which concluded with Matthew Stafford leading a game-winning touchdown drive to overcome the 8-9 NFC South champions on the road – Smith said, “Carolina’s defense is talented…have you seen the Chicago defense? It’s not this Carolina defense, I will tell you that.”
Don’t get me wrong, I think Carolina’s defense is talented, but it’s not like they were a lights-out unit this season. They were middle-of-the-pack in both yards per game (327.2) and points per game allowed (22.4), compared to the Bears, who were closer to the bottom of the league in those categories (361.8 YPG & 24.4 PPG). They had 12 fewer takeaways (21) than the Bears did (33), though, and against playoff teams, they allowed 28.75 points per game, including their Wild Card loss to Los Angeles. So, while Carolina does have some defensive talent, I’m not quite sure why Smith was speaking as if they were a defensive juggernaut far and away better than Chicago.
Smith also acknowledged that the weather could play a significant role in how the game plays out. He also wasn’t entirely down on the Bears. Toward the middle of the clip, he goes on to speak about how big a fan he is of Caleb Williams and Ben Johnson.
David Banks-Imagn ImagesAt this point, given what we’ve seen from Chicago’s football team this season, quite literally anything is possible. But if you watched the game on Saturday night and saw the switch flip defensively for Dennis Allen’s unit once the necessary personnel changes were made, you saw a unit playing with much more confidence. And you saw one that gave Jordan Love fits when they pressured him.
Who knows what’s going to happen on Sunday? Maybe the Bears defend their homefield. Maybe the Rams come in and knock them off. Heck, if the Bears’ season does end with a loss this year, it will almost certainly be due to the defense coming up short. But we’ve seen time after time what happens when people doubt this team. We’ve seen time after time how big a homefield advantage Soldier Field provides, especially for the defensive side of the football. Given how this season has played out thus far, anyone would be ill-advised to give Ben Johnson’s club no shot to come out victorious when the ball kicks off on Sunday evening.
