ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Jaden Henley led the Grand Canyon ‘Lopes in points and rebounds in a 87-64 losing effort against the New Mexico Lobos on Tuesday night.
Henley had 17 points on 5-for-11 shooting, six rebounds and was also the co-leader for GCU in assists (two), but the ‘Lopes shot a poor 34% (22 for 65) from the floor in the road loss. He also added a steal and a block in his 34 minutes.
The senior guard has averaged 17.2 points per game this season, only failing to get into the double-digits on one occasion.
GCU fell to 10-6 and 3-2 in its first season as a member of the Mountain West. It had just come off a pair of convincing 18- and 17-point victories over Boise State and San Jose State.
Jake Hall led New Mexico (14-3, 5-1) with 22 points, shooting 7 for 12 (2 for 3 from 3-point range) and 6 of 7 from the free-throw line.
The Lobos’ Uriah Tenette shot 4 for 8 (1 for 3 from 3-point range) and 5 of 5 from the free-throw line to add 14 points. JT Rock shot 5 for 8, including 2 for 3 from beyond the arc to finish with 13 points, while adding four blocks.
GCU also got 13 points from Makaih Williams. Brian Moore Jr. finished with 11 points.
New Mexico took the lead 42 seconds into the game and did not trail again.
Hall led the Lobos with 10 points in the first half to help put them up 38-33 at the break. New Mexico pulled away with a 10-0 run in the second half to extend a 15-point lead to 25 points.
The Lobos outscored GCU by 18 points in the final half, as Hall led the way with a team-high 12 second-half points.
The ‘Lopes return to Phoenix and Global Credit Union Arena on Saturday to take on No. 23 Utah State (14-1, 5-0). Tipoff is set for 12:30 p.m. and the game can be seen on FS1.
