Reliving the history made during Saturday's Bears vs. Packers showdown ...Middle East

News by : (NBC Chicago) -

The Chicago Bears have made it a habit to rewrite history books this season, and they certainly did plenty of that on Saturday night.

The Bears erased an 18-point deficit to defeat their hated rivals at Soldier Field, and they advanced to the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs for the first time since the 2011 postseason.

Here’s a recap of some of the history the Bears made on Saturday night.

A victory that was a long time coming

Bears fans were downright delirious after the game, and it’s not hard to imagine why, considering just how long it had been since they had last seen their team capture a playoff victory.

In fact, it had been nearly 15 years since the Bears had won a playoff game, last doing so on January 16, 2011 against the Seattle Seahawks at Soldier Field.

A rare triumph in a storied rivalry

The Bears and Packers have played more than 200 times in their collective history, but Saturday’s game marked only the third time that the teams had ever played in a postseason game.

It had been 84 years since the Bears had beaten the Packers in the playoffs, and that went away in a 31-27 victory.

Look away, Falcons fans

Entering play on Saturday, NFL teams were 3-158 when they trailed by 15 or more points entering the fourth quarter of a playoff game.

In winning the game against the Packers, the Bears became the first team to erase a deficit of that size since the New England Patriots stormed back against the Atlanta Falcons, winning Super Bowl LI in an overtime thriller.

What didn’t Caleb Williams achieve on Saturday?

For starters, the Bears’ quarterback became the youngest in team history to win a playoff game.

Not surprisingly, his 361 passing yards in the game set a Bears record for most passing yards in a single postseason game.

He also became just the seventh Bears quarterback to throw for 300 or more yards in postseason play for the team, and he did so in just one game, passing Jay Cutler’s career total with the team.

The current Bears record holder for postseason passing yards is Jim McMahon, who threw for 967 yards in six postseason games with Chicago.

Another milestone for a talented rookie

Bears tight end Colston Loveland has set numerous team records in his rookie season with the Bears, and he added another one to his collection on Saturday.

Loveland ended the game with eight catches for 137 yards, and he became just the ninth Bears player to rack up 100 or more receiving yards in a game.

The 137 yards were the most ever by a Bears rookie in a playoff game, and left him just shy of Allen Robinson for the most of any Bears player in a postseason contest. Robinson had 143 yards in the 2019 NFC Wild Card matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles at Soldier Field.
