During Season 2, the episode “Fonzie’s Getting Married” was filmed on a soundstage in front of an audience as an experiment. The opening credits to the January 1975 episode featured a voiceover from series star Tom Bosleyto announce, "Tonight’s Happy Days was filmed before a live audience."

After Richie (Ron Howard) asks him if he is serious, the Fonz replies, “You guys hear me turn off the jukebox?... Did you hear what was on the jukebox? Fats Domino! Would I turn off 'The Fats'?"

Unfortunately for Fonzie, his fiancée, Maureen (Nellie Bellflower) is later identified as an exotic dancer known as “The Lone Stripper.” Bosley’s Howard Cunningham recognizes her from a hardware convention, tells Fonzie, and it’s goodbye engagement.

The positive response to the “Fonzie’s Getting Married” episode led to a permanent change as Winkler’s character became a bigger part of the show.

“At first, we shot it like a movie, with one camera at a studio – Arnold’s diner was on the back lot,” he shared. “Then, in 1975, we started filming before a live audience. On Monday morning, we’d do a read of the new script… At 4 p.m. on Friday, they brought in an audience of 300, and we did the episode, foibles and all. The writers then feverishly rewrote the things that didn’t work, giving us notes over dinner, which we’d memorize while getting into costume and makeup. Then at 7 p.m., we filmed before a new audience, barreling through until about 1 a.m., by which time the crowd were falling asleep.”

“Donny, Henry, and I, we had done theater, and we were excited about this, because every Friday was like opening night, you know, a little nervous, live audience,” Williams revealed to the audience. “Ron Howard, on the other hand, had never done a stage show.”
