Zach Collins Has ‘Significant Sprain,’ No Bulls Return Timeline ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

The Chicago Bulls haven’t been fully honest about the nature of a key player’s injury? What a shock. Reserve center Zach Collins, Chicago’s best rim defender, has been on the shelf for nearly two weeks with a big toe sprain.

Per Kyle Williams of The Chicago Sun-Times, the oft-hurt veteran big man isn’t expected back any time soon. Now wearing a walking boot, Collins has incurred a “pretty significant sprain,” according to Chicago head coach Billy Donovan. There are currently no plans for surgery. Chicago is still determining a timeline for how long Collins will remain in his boot.

It’s important to note that Collins was originally projected to be out for 10 days before being re-examined. The news that not only has he not recovered, but the cold, hard reality that his ailment could linger for a good long while makes one wonder why that initial diagnosis was so sunny.

A Key Trade Chip Off the Table in Zach Collins?

The timing on this news is not ideal. With less than a month remaining before this season’s Feb. 5 trade deadline, Collins’ expiring money could have been a nice asset for a Chicago team that allegedly is looking to sell.

Donovan also provided an update on the Bulls’ best player, starting point guard Josh Giddey.

Joel Lorenzi of The Athletic reports that Giddey has resumed “on-court work.” That said, the medical staff is keeping tabs on Giddey before he can take next steps in his recovery from a hamstring strain that’s kept him out since Dec. 29. Chicago currently has no timetable for a Giddey comeback. The longer he sits, the weaker his case to be named to an inaugural All-Star squad.

Per Lorenzi, Donovan also told reporters that rookie forward Noa Essengue is back to doing some lifting after a season-ending shoulder surgery last month.

Next up for Chicago is a clash with the visiting Dallas Mavericks on Saturday night. Dallas will be without All-Stars Anthony Davis or Kyrie Irving.
