Reports: Cubs to sign All-Star Alex Bregman after Diamondbacks interest ...Middle East

Sport by : (Arizona sports) -

The Chicago Cubs won the sweepstakes for prized free agent third baseman Alex Bregman, whom the Arizona Diamondbacks had emerged as a potential suitor for this offseason, according to multiple reports on Saturday.

MLB Network’s Jon Heyman first reported the deal, with ESPN’s Jeff Passan reporting the contract is for five years and worth $175 million. The deal comes with a no-trade clause.

The Diamondbacks became a longshot at best for Bregman once they made it clear on Friday that star second baseman Ketel Marte would not be traded.

Bregman lives and trains in the Valley during the offseason, and the D-backs, Toronto Blue Jays and Boston Red Sox were considered teams in the mix along with Chicago.

MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand wrote on New Year’s Day that the Diamondbacks and Blue Jays were believed to be the most aggressive teams going after Bregman with a Red Sox reunion still on the table. ESPN’s Buster Olney said on Jan. 2 that the Red Sox had made an aggressive offer.

Bregman opted out of a three-year, $120 million deal with the Red Sox after one season. He was an All-Star and clubhouse leader for a younger Boston squad last season. He hit 18 home runs with an .821 OPS in 114 games, having missed time with a quad strain.

The veteran spent his first nine MLB seasons with the Houston Astros, winning a couple World Series titles (including the since maligned 2017 championship) and playing in 99 playoff games for the club.

From 2018-24, Bregman made two All-Star Games, won a Gold Glove, a Silver Slugger and finished top five in the AL MVP voting twice.

The Cubs are looking to take another step after making the postseason as a Wild Card team last year. Kyle Tucker remains a free agent after an All-Star season for Chicago. Tucker, Cody Bellinger and Bo Bichette are considered the top bats remaining on the market.

The Diamondbacks will continue to look to add bats, although the main focus for the rest of the offseason is pitching and defense.
