GREECE, N.Y. — When Tim Miller, a key member of the nonprofit Operation Caring Hearts, died in a deadly crash a few weeks ago, his fiance was heartbroken.

“I still don’t think it’s real. I just don’t want to believe that he’s gone,” said Rebecca Mearns, who also serves as the co-founder of the organization.

Mearns shared that Miller played a crucial role in Operation Caring Hearts by collecting donations such as tents, sleeping bags, and food from local bakeries. “Tim was such a vital part. It’s going to be a giant piece missing,” said Mearns, who was engaged to Miller for 5 years.

Scott William Davis, a friend of Miller, described him as a mentor. “He was not just a friend. He was a mentor to me,” said Davis, a blind man. “And he was very good, not only with working with the blind, but he’s also very good with other people in general.”

Virginia McIntyre, a Monroe County legislator, emphasized the challenge of continuing Miller’s legacy, saying, “We are all trying to continue their legacy, but I don’t think anybody can replace Tim.”

Now, community members like Bryan Dezio, who owns Capone’s Italian Eatery, and Jake Bishop of the Dezio & Gingello Foundation, are stepping up to support Operation Caring Hearts.

“Let’s just come together as a community and just do what’s right, just help people,” said Dezio.

Operation Caring Hearts plans to honor Miller’s memory by working with Capone’s to distribute meals to the homeless on Feb. 1.

“It’s really nice to see people come together and, you know, pay it forward,” said Mearns.

Miller’s funeral is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 31, at Grace Church of the Nazarene on Union Street in Chili. All are welcome to attend, and in lieu of flowers, donations to Operation Caring Hearts are encouraged. You can donate here.
