While we are playing the waiting game when it comes to Rome Odunze’s status for the Chicago Bears’ upcoming playoff game against the Green Bay Packers, his quarterback made a declaration that grabbed my attention:
Caleb Williams on Rome Odunze:"It's going to be great. Excited to have him back."
— Adam Hoge (@AdamHoge) January 6, 2026Rome Odunze’s availability for Bears-Packers playoff game trending in a positive direction
Bears quarterback Caleb Williams hinting at Rome Odunze’s imminent return put a big, goofy smile on my face. Odunze hasn’t played since Chicago’s Black Friday win against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 13. After sitting out the first Bears-Packers matchup in December, Odunze tried returning to the lineup for the team’s Week 15 game against the Cleveland Browns. Unfortunately, Odunze reaggravated the foot injury that took him out of action in the first place and has been on the sidelines since.

Before going down with the foot injury, Rome Odunze put up 44 catches, 661 receiving yards, and six touchdowns in 12 games. That put him at a pace for 62 catches, 936 receiving yards, and 9 touchdowns. Depending on how things went down the stretch, a healthy Odunze could have hit the 1,000-yard receiving milestone. That would’ve been neat. However, the silver lining in the dark cloud that was Rome’s injury-related absence was that we did get to see the emergence of rookie pass catchers Luther Burden III and Colston Loveland down the stretch.

Mandatory Credit: Joseph Maiorana-Imagn ImagesTight end Colston Loveland ended the year as Chicago’s top pass-catcher with 713 receiving yards. Some of his best work came while Rome Odunze was on the sideline. During Odunze’s five-game absence, Loveland caught 27 of 38 targets thrown his way, pciked up 307 receiving yards, and scored three touchdowns. To give those numbers some additional perspective, that is a 92-catch, 1,044-yard-, 10 touchdown pace over 17 games. As for fellow rookie Luther Burden III, the wideout snagged 21 catches, 324 receiving yards, and one score in four games. That comes out to a 17-game pace of 89 catches, 1,377 yards, and 4 touchdowns.
MORE INJURY UPDATES: Bears Are Hopeful Kyler Gordon Will Return to Practice
It is encouraging that the Bears were able to use Rome Odunze’s absence to help further the development of rookie pass catchers and allow quarterback Caleb Williams develop a rapport with a pair of young players. However, let’s not kid ourselves. Williams will be happy to see Odunze back in the lineup. Chicago’s QB1 has completed 98 of 189 passes intended for Odunze, thrown for 1,406 yards, 9 touchdowns, and 4 interceptions. Having that go-to-guy available will only help boost the Bears offense.
Hopefully, Tuesday’s injury report will back up Caleb Williams’ optimism regarding Rome Odunze’s return to the lineup. Stay tuned.
