Matt Eberflus couldn’t even make it a calendar year as the Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator.
Eberflus, who was hired to run Dallas’ defense last offseason, has already been removed from his post:

The Dallas Cowboys hired Matt Eberflus as their defensive coordinator in January 2025, which came roughly two months after the Chicago Bears fired him as their head coach. Since then, it seems as if nothing has gone well for the former Bears head coach. Eberflus had a poor showing in the NFLPA grades, was put on blast by quarterback Caleb Williams in an interview with Esquire, and then lost the lynchpin to his defense when Micah Parsons was traded to the Green Bay Packers before the start of the regular season. Things didn’t go any better after the sason began. Ben Johnson and the Bears offense lit Eberflus up in Week 3 and it has been all downhill ever since.
All in all, the Matt Eberflus firing news isn’t at all surprising. The Cowboys finished 7-9-1 as a team despite having the NFL’s seventh-best offense because the defense coughed up a league-worst 511 points. And when he dropped a bizarre quote about his defense’s shortcomings, it was only a matter of time before Dallas dumped Eberflus and left him in the past.

NFL jobs are hard to come by. It feels like a million-to-one shot landing a gig at the highest level. But here is Matt Eberflus, landing opportunities to work for a pair of the NFL’s most prestigious franchises, and fumbling the bag in the most clownish way possible. Eberflus’ unwillingness to make adjustments, enact change, or take accountability leading to his firing by two franchises known for being loyal to a fault with coaches is pretty damning when you think about it. Frankly, it makes me so happy that this is no longer our problem.
The NFL is known for giving second chances. So there is a chance that Matt Eberflus finds his way onto some team’s coaching staff. And while I’m not sure how many more second chances Eberflus will get, it does not seem like he is deserving of another.
