The Chicago Blackhawks remain undefeated in 2026! Their latest success, a 3-2 overtime win over the Vegas Golden Knights, saw a superb defensive performance not have those one or two moments that have cost the Blackhawks games in recent years (and, frankly, earlier this year). A good Vegas team — some would still argue is a Stanley Cup contender even with their recent struggles — was held to seven shots on net in the final 41:18. That’s really, really good.
Tyler Bertuzzi became the first Blackhawks skater to reach 20 goals this season with his first period marker last night. It took him 72 games to reach 20 goals last year. It took him 79 games to reach 22 goals last year, the number Bertuzzi reached with his hat trick on Sunday night — his 39th appearances this year. Bertuzzi is the only Blackhawks skater with more shots on goal since the start of December than Ryan Greene. Ironically, there were periods last year where we wondered if Bertuzzi would ever score another goal because he had such bad puck luck. If Greene keeps getting these chances and starts finishing, look out.Ryan Greene hasn't scored since the start of December despite racking up 54 shot attempts and 29 shots on goal during that span. He's ridiculously snakebitten. Just got robbed again:pic.twitter.com/IspgiC9rtp
— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) January 5, 2026 The Blackhawks allowed only 15 shots on goal on Sunday night against Vegas. That’s tied for the fewest SOG the Blackhawks organization has allowed in any game since 2013. Before the Blackhawks played the Golden Knights, head coach Jeff Blashill was asked about the progress of Frank Nazar. He said he’s getting there, but “he hasn’t really been skating yet, so he’s still a little bit away.” Blashill wouldn’t commit to a timeline for Nazar to return. He does expect Connor Bedard back before the Olympics break, though. Good read here from Ben Pope on where the Blackhawks are (were) at the 41-game mark in the 2025-26 regular season. They are ahead of last year’s pace in the standings, even without their two young stars. The Blackhawks have reached the midpoint of their season. They have 39 points in 41 games — nine more than the midpoint of last season and 13 more than the year before.New story analyzing all of their other team stats from the first half: t.co/G2VGnTP0Gw
— Ben Pope (@BenPopeCST) January 4, 2026 At the World Junior Championship, Blackhawks prospect Anton Frondell was the hero in the eighth round of the shootout to send Sweden to the gold medal game. He was named one of Sweden’s three best players in the tournament as selected by their federation. Here he is talking after the dramatic win:Have really enjoyed Anton Frondell’s interviews over the last few years. Here’s the shootout hero for Sweden post-game: pic.twitter.com/q1akRjTic0
— Scott Wheeler (@scottcwheeler) January 5, 2026 In the other semifinal game at the World Juniors, Václav Nestrašil and Czechia once again had no fear of Canada. Nestrašil had the primary assist on a go-ahead goal early in the third period and added a few big hits in the game.ASSIST: Vaclav Nestrasil with the primary assist on an amazing goal from Vojtech Cihar! pic.twitter.com/lQVg7kMpja
— BHF (@BlackhawksFocus) January 5, 2026 With their dramatic win, Nestrašil and Czechia will face Frondell and Sweden for gold tonight. The puck drops at 7:30 PM CT and the game is on NHL Network in the USA. I will point out once again that the Czechia-Sweden matchup guarantees that a Blackhawks prospect will win gold at the World Juniors. A Hawks prospect has won gold in the tournament every year since 2021. That’s one helluva streak! David Pagnotta at The Fourth Period reported on Sunday that the season might be over for veteran defenseman Chris Tanev. If Tanev, 36, goes on LTIR, that could give the Leafs some much-needed cap space. But losing a dependable right-handed defenseman means Toronto would need to replace him. The Leafs are also without veteran forward Dakota Joshua, who injured his kidney last week. According to Pagnotta, “Toronto’s desire to add a puck-moving defenceman and a top-six forward to their lineup.” The San Jose Sharks signed 31-year-old center Alex Wennberg to a three-year extension that has a $6M cap hit. Finally, a scary moment in Florida for Colorado captain Gabriel Landeskog, who battled thru so much to come back to the NHL this season. Avs head coach Jared Bednar said Landeskog is going to “miss some time” with an upper-body injury. Other Avs players were thankful his legs are okay after what he’s been thru to get back in the league. But… a rib injury could have him out until after the Olympics.Gabriel Landeskog needed assistance leaving the ice after crashing hard into the post. pic.twitter.com/3PeGwYxuKz
