Weld County will maintain the same property tax rate in 2026 as it had in 2025, though residents will still pay more due to higher local and school assessment rates.
In early December, the Weld County commissioners received a presentation from the county assessor showing that the county’s assessed value had increased by only 2.5% since the 2024 valuation, bringing the total value to $20.1 billion. Though the increased value assessment doesn’t result in a significant property tax increase from the county, it is still higher than the county initially expected, which was only a 0.5% increase in July.
Oil and gas remains a predominant industry in Weld County, accounting for 66% of the county’s overall assessed value. Weld County Commissioner Kevin Ross said the county is beginning to see a slight reduction in oil and gas production, though rising prices have offset that potential loss and are anticipated to keep its value relatively unchanged for the next couple of years.
“Overall barrels of oil produced and the overall cubic feet of gas produced saw a slight reduction, but the price was slightly higher, so that’s what offsets it,” Ross said.
In response, the commissioners voted to approve maintaining the current mill levy of 15.956 mills for 2026, six mills below the state limit. This means that for every $1,000 of assessed residential property value, the county will tax residents $15.95. According to Commissioner Chair Perry Buck, Weld County continues to have one of the lowest mill levies of any county in the state.
“So we have the ability to tax at a full 22.038 mills, but we set it at 15.956, and that’s exactly what it was last year,” Weld County Commissioner Kevin Ross said.
County staff and assessors, however, have warned that Weld residents will still see an increase in their property taxes due to state legislation passed in 2024 that established different assessment rates between local governments and school districts. Most of the tax increase will be reflected in the school district’s property tax assessment notices, which does not go to Weld County.
Residential property valued at $500,000 can expect to pay $1,656.75 in taxes to the school districts and $1,562 to local governments, according to the county.
With the approval of the assessed value and establishment of the mill levy, the county’s 2026 budget process is complete. The county expects a 1.6% revenue increase in 2026, to $584.3 million, with expenditures of just under $703 million. Though expenditures exceed incoming revenue, the county’s anticipated fund balance of $870.5 million, including $315.1 million in property tax revenue to be collected, will offset them.
This increase in spending is primarily due to increased funding for the Public Works and Public Safety departments, driven by the county’s growing population.
“Despite the uncertain and pressing challenges, the Board, other elected officials and managers must continue to provide strong financial and strategic leadership,” Weld County Chief Financial Officer Cheryl Pattelli said in the 2026 Budget Book. “This enables Weld County to provide critical health, social, public safety and general government services to support a diverse and growing population.”
Between 2026 and 2030, the county expects to spend $541 million on various projects, with $47.6 million allocated to capital improvements in 2026 alone. Of that $541 million, a total of $347 million will go to the new Weld County Judicial Center in downtown Greeley and the remaining $144 million will go toward the inclusion of the District Attorney’s Office in the Weld County Administration Building.
