A man is facing charges after he attempted to blow up a suburban gas station and attacked a clerk after she declined his inquiry into a job application, authorities announced Friday.
On the morning of Dec. 31, 29-year-old Austin Silverman approached a clerk at the Shell gas station located at 110 North Eastwood Drive in Woodstock and asked for a job application, authorities said.
The clerk declined his inquiry, and Silverman “became enraged,” authorities said. He then went behind the counter and attacked the clerk, punching and kicking her repeatedly.
Authorities said Silverman at some point “stopped the brutal attack” and went outside. The clerk was able to lock the door after he exited, however, while outside Silverman unsuccessfully attempted to blow up the gas station by extinguishing a cigarette into a gas pump, authorities said. Moments later, he attempted to re-enter the store.
The clerk sustained severe injuries to her face, ribs and arms, authorities said.
Responding officers identified Silverman after reviewing surveillance footage, authorities said.
Silverman is facing one count of attempted first degree murder and one count of aggravated battery in a public place.
During a hearing Friday, a judge ordered Silverman to remain in custody pending his trial.
“This was a brutal, heinous, and unprovoked attack on a defenseless woman. We are pleased that, after the hearing, our petition to detain this dangerous defendant was granted and that he will remain in custody pending the outcome of these charges,” McHenry County State’s Attorney Randi Freese stated.
Silverman’s next court appearance is scheduled for January 7.
