The '80s-set supernatural sci-fi series has undoubtedly become one of Netflix’s biggest shows, holding an almost unrivalled cultural grip over that time. But all good things must come to an end, with the five seasons always forming part of the Duffer Brothers’ plan for the series.
Meanwhile, the stage show Stranger Things: The First Shadow remains hugely popular, both in the West End in the UK and on Broadway in the US.
Why won't there be a Stranger Things season 6?
The creators have long held the view that the show would run for only four or five seasons, admitting they didn’t want the Netflix behemoth to be “one of those shows that runs out of gas” as fans lost interest.
The Duffer brothers previously discussed during press for season 2 that they wanted Stranger Things to have a “really finite ending”, even turning to Breaking Bad creator Vince Gilligan for advice on how to nail a satisfying conclusion.
"Each of those days was really hard," he added. "But I would argue it was harder for me and Ross, because we had to experience it many, many times for everybody’s final day!"
Ultimately, Stranger Things is ending is to ensure that it goes out on a high, rather than suffering from a drop in quality - something that has plagued certain other shows, as fans lose interest. Who can forget that final season of Game of Thrones?!
Are there any Stranger Things spin-offs in the works?
The series, titled Stranger Things: Tales from ‘85, follows Eleven, Max, Mike, Lucas, Dustin and Will as they face new monsters and uncover a paranormal mystery terrorising their town.
Set in 1985 – between the events of Stranger Things’ second and third season - showrunner Eric Robles teased in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that the series will feature a season-long mystery, alongside plenty of horror elements.
"We’ve had the idea for a live-action spin-off for a few years, and only recently have we actually had the time and bandwidth to work on it," he continues. "But it’s not a continuation of the story of any of these characters in the flagship show, or of Hawkins."
"It very much feels like Stranger Things," Matt agreed. "As soon as Stranger Things 5 releases we’re going to jump into working properly on the spin-off. We’re really excited about it."
What can fans expect from Stranger Things: Tales from ‘85?
Viewers will be able to head back to Hawkins later this year when the franchise’s first major spin-off series arrives - and it certainly sounds like the animated show will follow in the same footsteps as Marvel’s recent successes.
Following the success of animated revivals such as X-Men '97, the Duffer Brothers wanted to similarly evoke the feeling of "an 80s cartoon".
He confirmed that "the stakes are real for the kids. It's not Scooby-Doo, man. It's not like, 'Oh, well, it'll be fine.' We don't know if it'll be fine."
So while this era of Hawkins and its ragtag bunch of misfits may not return anytime soon - or indeed, ever - there will certainly be more chapters and adventures to enjoy in the Duffer Brother’s much-loved universe.
Stranger Things: Tales from ‘85 is coming to Netflix in 2026.
