Keelon Russell confirms plans to stay at Alabama ...Middle East

News by : (The Crimson White) -

Alabama true freshman quarterback Keelon Russell confirmed Tuesday his plans to stay in Tuscaloosa for next season and not enter the NCAA transfer portal.

“I’m 100% here,” Russell said at Rose Bowl media day. “I’m worried about the Rose Bowl, going out there and doing my thing, helping out Ty [Simpson].”

Russell is a former 5-star recruit and the Crimson Tide’s highest-rated recruit ever, according to 247Sports. He has spent this season competing for the team’s backup role with quarterback Austin Mack, appearing in two games and completing 11/15 passes for 143 yards and two touchdowns.

In a time where roster turnover has soared to unprecedented levels — with 1,445 players set to enter the NCAA transfer portal on Jan. 2 — Russell is prioritizing waiting his turn to lead Alabama’s offense, much like Simpson did.

“I came here to win national championships,” Russell said. “We’ve got a Rose Bowl coming up, so I don’t really worry about all those aspects. My time’s gonna come.”

Sitting behind Simpson and Mack has helped the Duncanville, Texas, product learn the ropes and improve his skill from two signal-callers who learned from NFL quarterbacks Bryce Young, Michael Penix Jr. and Jalen Milroe.

“Being developed is the biggest thing I came to college for,” Russell said. “I came to Alabama to be developed. So having that learning experience is the best thing, and that comes from patience.”

Russell could be faced with a competition for the starting job in the spring, depending on Simpson’s looming NFL draft decision and a possible departure for Mack. Russell acknowledged that he has a spot to earn, but just needs to keep working hard.

“We’re working on winning a national championship right now, but my mindset is to keep working hard every day, wake up with the motivation to go at and attack another day,” Russell said.

Alabama meets Indiana in Pasadena, California, on Thursday in the 112th edition of the Rose Bowl. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. CT, and the game can be streamed on ESPN.
